Help-storing my Wedding dress before the big day!

Cynthia, on March 7, 2020 at 10:36 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 6
Today I went to try on my dress. After the appointment, I was asked if I wanted to take it home or store it there for $50. I was so thrown off by the question and the fee that I instantly said, “we will take it”. Fast forward, it is currently hanging in my aunt’s guest closet after I anxiously tried to figure out where to keep it for 7 months. I am now in debates whether to take it back to have it stored there or just keep it at my Aunts. A few things I’m thinking about- 1)the inconvenience it is for my aunt to make sure nothing happens to my dress: 2) is it being properly stored?; 3) will my dress get ruined before the big day?; 4) I’ll have the chance to find a different place for altercations, if I chose to.

Any thoughts on whether I should hold on to it or take it back? My wedding is in September 26,2020, my next appointment for altercations is mid-August.

Anywhere you store it you will have these same questions. Things can happen at the store at your home etc. a closet away from any sunlight and dampness is fine. I’d just worry about it wrinkling. It’s beautiful btw.

Why wouldn’t they store it until alterations? I’m not sure I’d take it to them for that because of charge

I think you’re just overthinking it! It’s normal to be concerned about your dress.

I guess I didn't realize some places charged for storage. When I purchased my dress, they automatically let me know that they would store it for free (granted, I'm also getting my alterations done there).

    Your dress is beautiful btw!

Just be sure the dress is hung by the ribbon loops typically sewn into the the under arm seam on the inside of the bodice and by the ribbon loop usually under the train -- those should support the weight of the dress without stressing the delicate fabrics of the dress itself. The dress should then be in a breathable cotton garment bag for a wedding dress. Then, just hang it somewhere with relatively low humidity. Daughter's salon gave us that advice when we picked her dress up a year before the wedding and it was perfect. She took it back to the salon for alterations about 3 months before the wedding and then took it home again when it was finished about 1 month before. 7-10 days prior to the wedding, she had it professionally steamed by an experienced dry cleaner -- they returned it to her stuffed with tissue paper so that when it came off the hangar the morning of the wedding it looked perfect. Daughter got engaged right around the time of the Alfred Angelo bankruptcy when bride's dresses were at times "held hostage" by the closure. Once her dress arrived from the manufacturer, she didn't want it anywhere other than under her control. Good luck!
