Help: Sheath dress makes me look blocky

Allison, on December 4, 2018 at 11:03 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 14

I fell in love with Maggie Sottero Ettia. I love everything about it... the sleeves, the embellishment, the back, the color... except how it makes my body look blocky and wide. I naturally have a narrow waist and wider hips and I feel like it's distorting my shape. Any ideas for alterations and tweaks to make this more figure flattering? I don't want to feel like a giant block on my wedding day. Side view doesn't look as horrible but from the front, I look so wide and shapeless.

not a full frontal view but may give better idea. As you can see this dress gives me no waist to hip definition. I just look straight up and down... Help: Sheath dress makes me look blocky 2

Hey Allison. I think your dress is beautiful. I know we are our own worst critics; I’m not seeing what you’re seeing. It’s your wedding day and you should feel confident! Have you thought about shapewear?

Look into a slip to poof the bottom out a bit. It looks like there is some flow so there should be room to fit a petticoat underneath. Maybe in a mermaid or trumpet shape.

My sheath dress did the same, so this is a picture with a mermaid shaped slip underneath. It actually made the dress flow more easily and it broke up the line from my hips to the floor.

I've tried shapewear with no luck. It just bugs me since I have a naturally defined waist and larger hips and I feel like it's just clinging to my hips and not giving me the definition in the waist. Going to talk to a bridal alterations specialist this weekend but trying to get some ideas of what to suggest to her.

Haven't tried this yet. Where did you get your petticoat?

I got mine from Davids Bridal for $79 but you can order one on Amazon for WAY cheaper just to see if it works for you.

I feel exactly the same about my dress and I'm now wishing I didn't buy it Smiley sad I don't get to see it again/try on the sample until June next year (wedding is in July), and all I do is obsess over the pictures I have...

I think you look lovely in your dress though- I know we are our own worst critics!

I think that dress is absolutely gorgeous on you and the beading around the waist defines your waist perfectly. I see your waist. You do not look blocky or wide at all. That dress was made for you!

I'm sure if you take it to a seamstress and see if they can take in a little around the mid-section it'll be more form fitting. That dress is gorgeous and so unique!
