help! question about old luggage

Mrs. Christie H~, on July 30, 2012 at 10:22 PM Posted in Honeymoon 0 11

I have old tweed Hartmann luggage with combination locks. Will I be able to travel with them or will TSA break the locks open? We just bought this luggage from a flea market (3 pieces worth about $600-- for $30!) and I don't want it ruined.

You are not allowed to have locked luggage, so I would assume they will want to go through them, I would call the airline and see.

You can have locked luggage it has to be tsa approved and combination locks are not approved since they won't have a master type key for it

Can you use different locks on it? I know that Bed Bath and Beyond sells TSA approved locks. If you could switch them out then that would be fine.

Check with the airline. Could you wait to lock it until after the inspection? If they check your luggage and then you lock it in front of them, would it be okay? I don't fly a lot so I really don't know.

You definitely need a TSA approved lock & even then I have seen them break the lock couple of times ...

If you lock it with the combination lock, then they will definitely damage it

Hi Christie, may I ask what you ended up deciding? I have the same luggage set and the same problem. Thanks!

We decided to take different luggage. After talking to the airport TSA employees, they would have broken into our luggage and we didn't want to deal with that on the way to our honeymoon.
