Help my rings are turning my finger black

Jamie, on January 9, 2017 at 10:54 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 8

My fiancé bought me a 18k white gold ring, it's been about 2 weeks and I have a black ring mark on my finger... Why is this happening? I'm not allergic to anything...

Are you pregnant or have an iron deficiency?

As far as I know i'm not iron defiant and i'm not pregnant. My fiancé said maybe it's a zinc issues.

I've had it happen with cheap jewelry but never with good stuff.

Definitely go see a dermatologist. That's not a normal reaction to real gold.

The article @JJ posted is really helpful!

How often do you wear your ring? Try taking your ring off when you apply makeup, at night, in the pool, and when working out. It sounds like you could also get your ring rhodium plated on the inside!

I second Leah. This happens with fake jewelry.

It sounds like it is fake. Take it off. The ring around your finger should wash off in a couple of days.

It can happen with real gold, especially white gold. It just depends on the alloys they use in the metal (some use nickel, some use zinc, in addition to silver,) and if the rhodium playing has worn off, plus your body's acidity. If you are naturally a more acidic person, and your ring was made with a high zinc content, then it is very likely that your body eroded the rhodium playing quickly and is wearing/corroding the zinc in the ring.

I would recommend going to a platinum or Palladium band instead of white gold, or yellow gold. Rose gold will probably turn green.
