Help! How to remove wrinkles from polyester dress!!!

jenn, on May 5, 2019 at 1:35 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 9
Hi everyone!!

Getting married in six days (eeeek) and the nerves have officially set in.

I purchased my dress from lulus.com, and it arrived with a ton of wrinkles. I emailed lulus support for care instructions and was told that the dress is 100% polyester and should NOT be dry cleaned nor even steamed (i assume ironing is also out of the question).

I was told to lightly spray the dress with cool water and hang it to dry, and that this *should* remove the *light* wrinkles. (Not sure if i would consider these wrinkles light though)

Anyway, i just did the spraying today and still have to wait for it to dry before the verdict is in but i am panicking and need your advice in case this doesn't work..

What other methods are there to remove wrinkles from polyester? What methods worked for you?

Helpppp!

Ask a qualified seamstress/costume mistress! They deal with all sorts of fabrics and have tricks of the trade to help with these issues.

Thank you! I have heard of others that have steamed polyester as well with great results. It's probably going to be my very last option if all else fails.

I'm sure as long as you did know heat and didnt stay on one spot too long it would be fine.

I hang most things with wrinkles in the bathroom and keep the door closed when I shower and that usually helps a lot. If that doesn't take them out, I'd probably try a handheld steamer on a low setting (try testing it somewhere that won't show too much). It's surprising to me that Lulu's discourages steaming for polyester. I'd be careful not to expose it to high temperatures (like with an iron, high-heat close steaming, or a hot dryer), but I've never heard of polyester not being gently steamed. What are the washing/cleaning instructions? If it can't be dry cleaned, then I'd expect it to be washable? If it is, then I might mist it and then put it in the dryer on a no-heat "fluff" setting, with a clean white towel or two and let it tumble, but check it every couple minutes. Good luck!

Typically you can steam, iron, and dry polyester with no problems. I have lots of dresses made of polyester that I just use regular care for. If it was anything besides your wedding dress I would say just to iron or steam it! But since it’s kinda important and you probably don’t want to roll those dice (even though it should be perfectly fine) I would just follow the instructions lulus gave and keep it hanging and start spraying water on it daily until your wedding to give it plenty of time for the wrinkles to fall out

Thank you to everyone that chimed in!

I wanted to update you guys...

I went ahead and bought a hand held steamer from Target last night.. Used it today and the dress is already looks SO much better - and no heat damage 😌!

There are still some wrinkles, as I was very careful with it and used the lightest setting but tomorrow I'll steam it again lightly to remove even more.

Thanks to everyone that offered advice!!
