Help!!! Honeymoon to Dominican?

Renae , on June 20, 2019 at 2:39 PM Posted in Honeymoon 0 9

We put down $1,000 for our honeymoon to Punta Cana in October. I am now getting nervous with all of the news coming from there. I am working with my travel agent about switching it up potentially. Any recommendation on Jamaica or Bahamas? I am nervous with those areas too. Our budget is about $3,000 and we want an all inclusive resort. Should we stick with the Dominican? Anyone else nervous about this??? Smiley sad

The Dominican Republic? This has to be a personal choice. The news is very alarming and I probably would not go. It’s a beautiful country but something is going on there. Bahamas is beautiful and so is Jamaica. Not sure how long you planned to stay but $3000 should get your a few nights. I’d say since you are having concerns you should probably go with another country to put your mind at ease.

My parents just switched a trip from Punta Cana to somewhere else for this very reason.

I don’t think I’d switch to Jamaica personally. One of my friends goes there frequently and doesn’t even pull out her phone to take pictures because the theft and crime there is so bad.

Just make sure you do your research wherever you’re considering switching to.

This is a very personal choice. We have our honeymoon in Punta Cana set for next month. We have discussed it at length, and, as of now, we are going to take our trip as planned. I know plenty of other people are changing. If you think you will spend your entire trip worrying, I would switch. The FBI is saying they will release a report of their investigation mid-July, so you can also wait until they get that out to make your decision if you'd like. There really is no right or wrong answer here. It is whatever you and your fiance feel is the right choice to make.

We are looking to switch for a different destination for our September honeymoon. I honestly don’t think we would have any issues in the DR. Frankly, I’m more concerned about catching a stomach bug (which I’ve heard plenty of people talk about there) than the odds of mysteriously dying. But we talked it over and it’s worth it for us to switch just to have the peace of mind and not have to stress about the news/ our trip. And honestly after all the bad publicity, I have no desire to even go to Punta Cana anymore.

How about the Us Virgin Islands? They are fantastic! Especially St Maarten it is beautiful and very very clean especially the Dutch side of the island. Or, consider a cruise.
Yes, I'd definitely, rather be safe than sorry. They are targeting tourists, unfortunately in the Dominican Republic.
When I went 25 years ago... it was lovely and I felt very safe...after 9/11 the world has changed drastically.
I loved Jamica, but it was years ago. Most other countries view us all as rich Americans and will do what ever to take advantage of what they assume us to be.
    Good luck!

Something my FH has repeatedly said to those who keep asking us to change our location is "Where do you feel we could go and you wouldn't be worried or anxious?" Mexico isn't any better and Jamaica has a higher crime rate, including sexual assault on resorts that are supposed to be "safe and secure."

When you leave the country, your risk is greater for bad stuff to happen no matter what the destination. Just be smart, do your research and choose somewhere you will feel comfortable and at ease! Good luck in your decision-making!

P.S. My FH and I will be going on our honeymoon to Punta Cana at the TRS Turquesa. No crime or deaths have happened there, and we are apart of their "Fan Group" Facebook page, and have people posting multiple times throughout the day of photos and how safe they feel.
