HELP! Bust is too exposed on my gown!

Elizabeth, on September 22, 2016 at 5:35 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 21

Oh goodness, where do I start with this one? I bought a beautiful chapel ball gown, corset back, strapless. I've got an exaggerated hourglass shape, thinking the corset would be perfect for my large bust. Indeed, the dress arrived, stunning. I tried it on. Everything fit BUT the bustline. What I mean it's the bustline comes too low, barely covers my areolas. Too much boob for a family event! The dress does everywhere else but this area! Holy crap, my wedding is in 30 days!! I went to a dress maker, who specialized in gowns. They tried to sell me one of their recycled gowns to switch the tops. HOW CAN I ADD FABRIC OR EMBELLISHMENTS to cover more breast? I don't have any more money to spend on expensive alterations.......there's got to be something that can be done!

The area I need to cover is from armpit to armpit.......... the photo attached is the neckline, but, my boobs are a 40DDDD. They barely fit.

Have you talked to the salon where you bought it? Did they measure you before they ordered it?

If you can find some lace that looks the same as the top you can add that to the bustline to cover more.

It might look ok if the lace comes down over the top instead of between the top and your chest. But you would need to talk to a seamstress

@BeachyL I ordered the dress from overseas, buying the larger size. It's a fit, but, not enough material in the front,it doesn't come up high enough over my bust.

@rebecca.m I was thinking about doing that.......it's a tulle gown. Maybe some tulle, built up to add coverage?

It's hard to comment without seeing in on you, but would a bolero offer enough coverage? Or would you consider a net topper with a tight weave?

Seems like you're just gonna have to suck it up and pay to have the alterations. Call around to some bridal salons and ask if they have a seamstress they recommend. The tulle idea isn't bad but you'll probably need something under the tulle as well.

This is one of the many reasons buying a dress online is discouraged. End up spending more money in the backend.

Can you look at getting a different bra to wrangle the girl's around so they are not so 'in everybody's face'?

I'm guessing you purchased this off a cheaper site and not from a designer. On which case buy a new gown or pay for the alterations. There is no way your getting a dress sent again with only 30 days to go. You're going to need alterations no matter what you do. Do look for the straightest most effective path that gets you your dress fitted. This will not be the least expensive path but honestly you don't have time to waste.

A bolero won't cover the front of your dress. Your boobs will still hanging out. There are slipcover tops you purchase on etsy but I really think you should go to a trusted seamstress and see what they can do. You don't want something popping out.

Perhaps you could match the lace and add a "back section/strap" to it. You wouldn't have to have it altered you could attach it your self so it's not "attached" to save money that way you can later remove it if you choose

Did you actually order it from Light in the Box? If you did and you only have 30 days, this is my suggestion. Find a seamstress that specialises in wedding dresses. Tell her that you need the front and back redone with illusion fabric. This will cost you about $500-$600. It's not just about adding more fabric, if it is a corset top, it will have to be completely taken apart and put back together to accommodate the fabric. You do not have much time.

You might be better off trying to find something off the rack at DB.

You can have someone sew lace at the top that goes over the top edge to give you more coverage. I used to work at a bridal shop and I did a ton of alterations. Adding to the top is totally possible it might just be a tad pricey. Take it to a good alterations place and they can do it! =]

PS adding a halter strap could help also! I've got a large bust too and halter are great ha

Yeah don't be like this bride.

Unfortunately, you need to get yourself into a chain store ASAP and look for another dress. This is why we usually don't recommend buying online overseas. Lots of horror stories, mixed with a few decent outcomes.

I second OG Kathryn. Its the risk you take when you order from China. Normally the dresses are just slightly off.

Its time to start emergency calling stores and start looking for a new dress off the rack. (No pun intended) All dresses need alterations, but having it fit correctly to begin with will bring the cost of alterations down a bit.

You can get a bolero that goes over the front and buttons or ties in the back. It basically makes it an illusion neckline but would still be removable if you wanted to take it off later. They have a bunch of them at DB for $90-150.

If you wanted to go the tool route, these are what I would envision going on the top. Personally I like the blue illusion neckline best, but I'm not sure that would add the coverage you're looking for. I think the black and pink version could work at hiding any differences in the two fabrics, but you need a good enough seamstress to pull it off.

I honestly agree with other posters, you should probably try to resell this dress and do an off the rack at DB or other bridal shop.

It's possible that you'll have to get a new off-the-rack dress, but don't give up yet. Take it to a seamstress with great reviews who specializes in wedding dresses. He or she might have an idea of how to fix it, so it's worth asking.
