Hellllpppp!!!! wedding dress cancellation - no refund policy

Michelle, on May 18, 2019 at 11:59 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 10
So last Monday I went to a bridal store, said yes to a dress, signed a no refund contract, left a deposit of 60% of the total of the dress. Within an hour and a half, I called the store and asked if they had placed the order. The woman who helped me said she hadn’t and was just about to; I asked her not to and that I had changed my mind. I’m supposed to go in this Monday to try on more dresses, I’m just concerned ... what if I don’t find one I love? The dress was never ordered, I feel like I should be able to get my money back. Thoughts?

Unfortunately if you signed a contract stating there is a no refund policy, you may not be able to get it back, as that's legally binding

You can't sign a no refund policy and get a refund. That's just not how it works. Hopefully you find a dress you like

That's not how it works. You signed a contract, you don't get a refund.

Well, you signed a contract so that will be hard to work with, but I have some ideas.

You MIGHT be able to get your money back. I think most stores have a no-refund policy because they dont want to shell out the money to have a designer make a dress, only to have the person who ordered it abandon the order in the middle of production, leaving them with the difficulty of selling a dress at a specific size; most often they end up selling such dresses at a loss, thus the no refund policy.
HOWEVER, your dress wasn't ordered. I suggest going into the store ASAP and talking to someone there (maybe a manager) about either A) getting your deposit back, since the dress wasn't ordered OR B) Asking if that deposit can be put toward another dress, if you find one you like better at another shop. Lots of dress shops want your business... even if they don't have a sample IN STORE for the dress you might want, most are more than happy to order the dress you want in for you. ASK if this is an option. HOPE THIS HELPS & GOOD LUCK!! Smiley smile Smiley shame Smiley shame

Yes, you signed the nonrefund contract, but the store would be out nothing if they refunded you since they hadn’t actually placed the order yet. Those clauses exist to protect the store from losing money. If they’re reputable, they should agree to give you your money back. I’m sure they would be more than willing to apply that amount to a new dress if find something there (just be 100% sure about what you want!).

Michelle, may I ask what happened? My daughter is in the same position currently. They put the order on hold, and we are to go in and try on other dresses. Between these visits, she has found a dress she loves at another shop, from a designer the first shop doesn't carry. Wondering if any compromise can be reached with the dress shop who is out nothing.

I would ask the shop that’s holding your deposit if they can order the dress she loves. I ended up finding a dress at the original store, but my shop did say if I went back and didn’t find anything they would place an order for another brand. Best of luck to your daughter, I’m sure everything will workout.

At least they let you cancel. I said yes to a dress on a Saturday the woman told me the place was closed because I questions if I can get a second layer of lace for a part that was a bit see through on the dress. Monday I called becuz I wanted to cancel the order and she would not answer me if it was ordered yet which I know it wasn’t and so she said she would get back to me. I emailed them as well. Now here comes Thursday they get back to me telling me it was ordered ans I can’t cancel I can’t get a refund all I can get is credit that will only last 30 days. My credit will forfeit if I don’t find another dress in their salon. SMH the morale 😢

If I hadn't placed the order, I will refund the bride.

Brides (and their mothers) feel so entitled that if something does go wrong, like can't get a refund (when they don't deserve it), will throw a fit. As a bridal store owner, you can't win on this one. Oh no, something didn't go as planned and the bride is a bit miffed; "This situation has caused irreparable harm to the bride and her special day will not be perfect". Call in the troops, the mother, friends, etc., the clan will leave negative reviews and can destroy a local small business.

We open what we had hoped was a happy small business. We experienced shipping issues for one bride during Covid, the fallout cost us our home, retirement savings and ultimately the business.
