Height of centerpieces

TooManyMistys, on August 19, 2013 at 9:33 PM Posted in Planning 0 18

So I was wondering if anyone is considering the height of their centerpieces when they come up with them? I didn't think too much about it until a few recent posts about making sure the guests at the tables can see each other. Originally, we were going to do something with wine bottles and flowers not sure but I tested it out at our table at home and could see where it's in the way. So I came up with a few other ideas to do with wine glasses maybe instead. So I was just wondering if others had to modify (or thought to) so your guests can still socialize with out trying to work around your centerpieces.. If so what did you find work best (any pics are helpful).

I didn't really... but my tables are on the large side so I don't "think" it'll interfere with socialization.

Centerpieces should either be low enough for people to see across, or very tall and thin, so people can see around them.

Here is an example of a taller one that can still be seen through/around.

Yes. It closes off half the table if they are in the way.

I think the rule of thumb is if you put your elbow on th table they shouldn't be higher than your palm?

This played a huge role in my decision. I've been to a wedding that the centerpieces were huge and we couldn't see anything around on the other side of the table. It was extremely annoying. On the other hand, I just went to a wedding where the centerpieces were below eye level and it was really nice. We are keeping ours below eye level no matter what final design we go with. I haven't actually started making mine yet, but this is a picture of what I'm going for. I'm putting the large vase on a mirror and surrounding it with 4 votive candles (slightly different colors than shown though - we are going to do a yellow flower for my teal/yellow/chocolate color pallet).

We had pinwheels in wine bottles, and they were fine. I think they were narrow enough though that they didn't interfere too much.

Thanks for the link Smiley smile What we have done for now is sit a mock in the center of our kitchen table and have someone sit across from me to see how well I could see them.

We definitely kept height in mind when thinking about centerpieces so that it wouldn't interfere with guests views of each other at the table.

We did birdcages that were about a foot or so tall. I can't remember the exact dimensions. They worked out to be a great height so that they were substantial, but not obtrusive. If that makes sense.

Here is one of just them on the table and then a photo of me sitting at a table with guests where you can gage the height of the centerpieces compared to the guests.

That's really cute. I was going to do lanterns until we came up with our theme. I'm still decided on what the heck we will do but I have plenty of time Smiley smile

This is really bad mock up pics... but this is what I am gonna do... ETA to finally add pics (sorry) and added some more insight... I am getting purple and green flower garland for the base (instead of using the green styrofoam ring)- ended up getting white flower garland. Getting 3 sizes of wine glasses from the Dollar Store and wrapping the stems with ribbon - nixed this idea too. Then Im also getting wine glass shades (lampshades) - which I did get, I need to add rhinestones on them. Instead of using the burning tealights, I got green and purple battery operated tea lights to put inside the wine glasses.

It turned out really cute... still have some minor details to work out, but I added pics under a new DIY centerpieces headline. Smiley laugh

@TooManyMistys, please remind us of your theme. I know that Motown is part of it. How are you hoping to tie wine with that?

My wheels are turning, on both themes.

We are having it at a winery. I have an idea with the wine bottles I just was afraid it now might be too tall after it was brought up recently. I mean people can just tilt and see around the bottle lol but I just wasn't sure if it would be too tall? My idea would be one I haven't seen done with a wine bottle. I have to see if I can find all the supplies still. But the height part is just the wine bottle with flowers at the top. (so far is the idea). I have had a few other ideas too.

The theme is Motown like you said and the colors are purple and silver. I am a big wine drinker as well. So some details are apart of who we are.

Cool. I wine bottle it just about eye level, when placed on a table. It your flowers can start (with the blooms) about 24" above the table top, you will be fine. Below that, you will block the view of guests.

With a Motown theme, I would be tempted to do something with flowers and 45 RPM

    records.

PS, I am in the wine business, so I do love the wine ideas too.

We are using the records as the table numbers and then the big records I have are going to be the whats underneath the centerpiece (like how people use mirrors). I am hoping to do a mock up soon just have to find everything. Once I post it I will show you guys and you can let me know what you think about the height especially.

This is definitely a concern for us. This is what we want (if we can afford it)

I don't like tall centerpieces, I think they are annoying, but hey it's your wedding and you can do what you want.
