Heels or flats?

Ashley M, on November 15, 2016 at 12:57 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 19

I have a ballgown and I've heard heels make you carry yourself a lot better with this type of dress. I bought flats but am considering heels for the ceremony & photos. Does anyone know of any comfortable heels? I don't wear them often so I'm not sure where to start looking.

I'm not sure about comfortable heels because I'm not a big heel wearer but Dr.schools inserts for high heels are really good

I would say that if you're not used to wearing them use caution in wanting them for your ceremony. When I was interning at a wedding planners I saw TWO brides within 6 months bust their ass walking down the aisle, and there's really nothing to be down except help them up and let them continue. It's super embarrassing for the bride. If you DO decide to go with heels, PLEASE practice in them. It sounds so dumb but people who don't wear heels try for the first time on their wedding day and realize how hard it can be if you're not used to them lol

Omg @chelsea those poor girls. I can't even imagine!! I would definitely have to practice and try breaking them in before hand.

Lol sorry, I reread and I guess it comes off a little harsh, definitely not trying to tell you not to 100%, but I do think that practice is a good thing haha

In my opinion, the only people who have any business wearing heels on their wedding day are the people who legitimately love heels and wear them all the time. If you don't like wearing heels, someone telling you their opinion on how you will theoretically carry yourself better in them should not be the reason you decide on heels.

On top of that, I don't think it's the best idea to have your dress hemmed for heels so you can wear them for pictures, when you want to wear flats for most of the reception. That means your dress is going to be too long when you change your shoes, and you'll be tripping over it for the fun, dancing portion of the night.

@salisbride I was just about to ask how to go about hemming if I decide to wear heels! I feel like it's not worth it when I'll be in flats the majority of the day. I'm just SO short compared to FH I wanted a little height for photos lol.

@chelsea definitely didn't come off as harsh!!

Be careful doing this. Your dress can only be hemmed to the proper length for ONE pair of shoes. So either it will be dragging in flats or too short for heels if you have two pairs.

I found a pair of cute baby wedges that are so short I can easily wear flats after. (The 'heel' is prob less than an inch).

Regarding hemming - if you DO with heels, hem to the length of your flats. Yes your dress will be slightly shorter in your heels but that's why we buy cute heels right? No one is going to probably notice anyways. And you don't want to be dragging the dress or tripping on it or ripping it in your flats.

I had heels for pictures but flats for everything else and I was so comfortable the whole night.

I'm wearing flats because I'm clumsy and never wear heels. I can't imagine trying to switch shoes under my massive dress! No one will see but a peek when I walk down the altar steps anyway

I second wedges or kitten heels. And definitely not 3" wedges if you don't usually wear heels. Depending on how casual your wedding is, Toms has some very comfortable cute ones but they are casual for sure.

Make sure you get heels for your feet. Sounds pretty duh, I know, but I can't, for example, wear regular width heels. They're either too small in the toes and cramp my feet, or slightly too long and my feet fall out. Luckily, David's Bridal had a few styles that came in wide width, so I found some and had them dyed a deep navy blue. My flats aren't quite as bad, but will definitely need some stretching/breaking in before the wedding because I couldn't find them in wide. Smiley sad

Heels force you to walk with better posture, regardless of the type of dress. I also highly recommend having your dress hemmed to flats, AND practicing walking in the heels plenty before your big day. Thicker heels are easier to walk in/balance on. Nobody wants to see a wobbly bride, lol.

I am not a huge heel wearer, but I did want to wear at least a small heel (it does give me better posture I think) I ended up getting a short kitten heel since I know that I can walk in that height and then a pair of flats for the reception if I need them. A trick that I learned with heels to make them more comfortable, and this is going to sound weird, but I swear by it. Tape your third and fourth toes together with scotch tape. I don't know why, something about redistributing weight, but it works. Sadly this wont work well with open toed shoes, but hey if your dress covers your feet and the tape is clear you might be able to work that too!

I'm wearing flip flops! I'm very clumsy and would absolutely die if I tripped or fell at my wedding!

@Bailey: Yeah, heels and grass, especially we grass, don't mix. You'd have been safer with wedges.

I am also wearing a ballgown and I am doing both.

I got 3" heels for the reception. I didn't want to go too high so they are comfortable. I will probably also put moleskin and insoles in them to ensure they stay comfortable.

I got flats with a tiny bit of lift for the ceremony (in the grass). I got the flats a few days ago from David's Bridal for $9.99 online. I will be able to talk in the grass on them.
