Having "two" weddings?

Paige, on April 5, 2017 at 9:59 PM

Hi all! I really wanted to see what everyone thinks...We want to get married, like going to the courthouse or just an officiant and moms or whoever. Then having the big wedding with all of the family down the road a little bit? Is it a good idea?

Thank you! That is exactly how I feel. Your wedding is the day printed on the marriage certificate. My fiance and I decided to postpone our April wedding, but people keep asking us if we'd do a small private ceremony for legal purposes and then do a big celebration later. Everyone I know who's ever done that - and I mean recreate an entire ceremony - has said it was more trouble than what it was worth, and if they had to do it over again, they'd stick with the small one.

That all being said, I'm not opposed to a small ceremony and then later a party of sorts, but no ceremony. This also comes from me having an intense dislike for repetition.

First, you do whatever makes you two happy.!! My groom and I are not following what considered traditional. We are getting married in Vegas, with a few friends accompanied ., then we will come back to our home in NY and have what we are calling "A blessing of our union". We will have a 30min ceremony, vowel revisit. I will have flower girl. bridesmaids etc. Yes! I will have on a wedding dress. (that's right I have 2x gowns.) We are doing it this way for parents, grandparents, family & friends that are not coming to Vegas. Call it non-traditional, tacky, improper. I dont care, because we are making this ours, doing what completes and makes us happy.

I agree with this. When you sign legal paperwork, whether wearing jeans or a ballgown, that is your wedding. Anything following is a renewal of vows. And yes people do get upset when you call the renewal your "real" wedding and act as though the legalities aren't the real wedding. I've attended a couple renewals where they ended up with very few in attendance because guests were not happy about being told that the legal ceremony didn't matter and that the renewal was their real date and thus declined.
