Having guests sit at reception tables for the ceremony?

Hannah, on December 8, 2016 at 3:54 PM Posted in Planning 1 22

Has anyone had or seen or plan on having their guests sitting at the reception tables as the ceremony seating? My FH and I are getting married in a small venue and to save time we're having the reception tables put up and decorated and having our guests sit at their spots for the ceremony. I wasn't sure if this would work out as well as I have it envisioned and I've never been to a wedding where this happened so any thoughts, tips, or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

I've done a number of weddings like this, especially smaller ones. It's totally fine.

Our ceremony And reception is in the same room. Soooooooo convenient. Our reception area is pretty big though. It always has a balcony/patio area reserved for my guest only . So if guest wanted to step outside they could. It also saved us $700 off. I just recommend not so large centerpieces so the people in the back can see the ceremony. But that depends on how it's set up.

We plan on doing this if the weather doesn't cooperate for our outdoor ceremony.

I've attended weddings that did this and it was really nice not to have to move, actually. I think it works best with smaller groups unless you have a really good layout for everyone to see the ceremony.

We planned on having it outdoors but the Farmer's Almanac said our day was supposed to be colder than usual and one of the highest chances for snow or rain so we found our venue for super cheap and just decided to do the indoor thing. I just have to figure out how to set up the tables so that I can easily walk through them.

Totally ok! I've planned weddings where we did exactly this.

2 things to keep in mind - make sure your families/important folks are at tables closest to your ceremony area. And pay attention to your layout because you will need to know your path to the ceremony area, which by the way, doesn't have to be in between tables. Just depends on where you're coming from and where you're going go.

We're doing this, on purpose. I'm not a fan of doing two location weddings (nothing wrong with doing it, I just want to make things as easy on my guests as possible) so everything will be in the same room.

My sister did this and it was actually really nice Smiley smile

It's our backup plan if outdoors doesn't work for us.

We chose a venue that has a fairly large sized Ballroom overlooking the ocean. They said that they do smaller weddings in there all the time, by dividing the room into distinct areas (dining tables in one section, a formal ceremony area with dividing Decor that they use, in the back of room is the bar with high tops and then the DJ and dance floor) they drew up this blueprint. After the ceremony the guests will go to their tables, and get drinks while the facility replaces ceremony space with high tops to enjoy the ocean view along the wall of windows and our photo booth in that area as well. :+)

We did it. I think it worked out great. Guests are looking across a small pond to the pergola we were standing on. If there were complaints, we didn't hear any.

If we went with other seating, we would have had to give up the pond and pergola and get married on a lawn, or guests would have had to vacate the tent for a while after the ceremony to accommodate table set up.

ETA: this was a photo from our DJ, who was set up to the extreme right under the tent. Guests did not have this obstructed view. You may want to make sure that pillars aren't in the line of sight for guests.

My venue actually calls it an Oscar style ceremony and I love it!

I've been a guest at a couple of weddings like this and I honestly didn't like it but it wasn't the end of the world.

I've seen this on that show "4 weddings" and they talked mad shit about it...

But I don't see a problem. I get to watch my friend/family member get married and eat and drink...sounds like a wonderful night to me
