Hat Box as a Cake Stand

Carole M (a.k.a "old tart"), on October 12, 2010 at 12:22 PM Posted in Planning 0 8

Hi everyone....If I posted this before, I apologize, but I don't think I did.

We are only having 50 people. Our cake is 3 tiers, hat box stacked, but it will look tiny. Soo, I was thinking....why not use a hat box. It will add 81/2 inches to the cake. I can order one from Sarah's hats that does not have the string or holes in it. I am stuck on color. The cake is a carrot cake with cream cheese frosting. It is being decorated with fall leaves and acorns. The biker topper is on the bottom. My tablecloths are ivory. The runners are brocade olive and berry. The centerpieces are brown pumpkins with fall flowers of different colors. Should I go with a berry box, an ivory box, or a brown box. I was considering having the cake table have a gold runner, like the sweetheart table. Thoughts? I was thinking brown would go better, as it would match the leaves, etc on the cake. THoughts? ANy other suggestions for a cheap cake stand? Thanks in advance!

Maybe you could find a plain ivory hat box and decorate it with some ribbon and flowers in your colors?

Then you could even put your names and date on it.

I think this is a really cute idea. I'd just try to make sure it was a pretty sturdy box for this.

Hmm. Wedding cakes are EXCEPTIONALLY heavy. If we are talking about a normally constructed hat box, there is no way it will support the weight. If it was constructed out of wood, then painted, sure. But you might want to rethink a regular hat box. The idea is super cute!

Hmm not sure about that. Why not have a handy man (not to sound sexists but most guys like building stuff) put something together for you, as a favor or gift?

Great suggestions ladies....I did find some from a craft place that are made of paper mache. Do you think this would work... It is a blank canvas, so I can decorate it any way I would like.

    Thoughts?

    Thanks in advance.

NO WAY will that hold the weight of the cakes. I love the idea though. I would use wood Smiley smile

Paper mache is not very sturdy....what about using it for a card box? Just cut a slit into it.

The only way you could pull it off would be to put something in the box for support- even, so I am not sure I would trust it.

Thanks everyone. I appreciate all the comments. I guess I need to figure out something else for a cake stand, perhaps get something made as someone suggested.
