Has anyone turned a sleeved dress strapless?

Brookieh, on April 14, 2019 at 9:28 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 12

There were many gowns I tried on and everyone fell in love with the super fitted mermaid ones that just aren't "me" as they say they make me look less short (i'm 5'4). I envisioned myself in a sparkly princess-style gown form fitting on top and kinda long train traditional back with lots of beading. The dress part of this is exactly what I have been dreaming of, I even told the stylist that EXCEPT for the sleeves.

It's already quite a bit over budget (but so was the family's favorite that I don't like) and I'm afraid alterations would be extensive and cost a fortune. Has anyone ever cut the sleeves and lace off of the neckline of a dress? The stylist said the support was in the zipper, that the sleeves could be cutoff and it could be turned into a sweetheart neckline. Would you recommend finding a similar dress that's sleeveless or do you think alterations would look ok on this? Even if it wasn't strapless, I would still love the dress if it was off the shoulder. It just will get too hot with full sleeves and they also don't look right on me. Has anything seen something like this but sleeveless?

To me, the sleeves and neckline make this dress. Alterations will be dependent in the seamstress or place so that's hard to guess.

The main issue with the sleeves for me is the fact that I have tiny arms and it looked just kinda like a super big drape on me haha

You can definitely get sleeves fitted to you. But ultimately it will be about how you feel in the dress. I would say seamstresses manage to do amazing things so whatever you want done can likely happen

I didn't realize sleeves could be fitted! Maybe that's the best solution then. Thanks for the information.

If you don't want a dress with sleeves, I'd keep looking. I agree with a pp that the sleeves/neckline on that dress are gorgeous, but there are a million other wedding dress options. It will likely be MUCH cheaper in the long run if you find a dress (within your budget) that has the features you want rather than planning on major reconstruction-type alterations. The Rebecca Ingram line from Maggie Sottero has beautiful dresses and they are all under $1200. Another option would be to look at Azazie. You can order dresses you like to try on, and all of their dresses are VERY reasonable. Good luck!

I actually had a similar idea with a different David's Bridal dress. My stylist told me that David's Bridal's alterations team can't and won't alter the style of the dress because it goes against their contract with their designers. They can "pin the sleeves inside the body of the dress," but that is as far as they can go without changing the design of the dress. (That being said, you're always welcome to have it altered elsewhere.)

I was actually planning to go elsewhere for alterations because I've heard from others that David's Bridal is expensive for alterations. That is an interesting concept though, if they're pinned inside then they're not visible.

Structurally you can remove those sleeves no problem. Budget shouldn't be too bad... However I would keep looking if this dress is over budget and not perfect.

Try azazie or cocomelody, both have try on at home options. Or keep trying boutiques

Hi Brookieh! How has the search been going? Did you choose this dress, or did you keep looking?

I kept looking -- I ended up finding something off the rack double my budget set by my parents, but I decided to pitch in to make up difference since it needed no alterations and fit perfectly.
