Has anyone tried menguin for mens tux/suit rentals? sketched out by fake reviews on WW.

Niki, on February 23, 2016 at 1:06 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 11

I stumbled upon a free code for a tux trial through menguin/weddingwire and the options seemed nice so i figured we would give them a try. However.... I'm looking at their weddingwire page and I'd be lying if I said it didnt freak me out.

Its like... literally page upon page upon page of what are clearly fake reviews from accounts with zero activity, save for a single menguin review, always weddings located in "north pole AK", and there are a few where its like.. a dozen accounts post in a row with the same wedding date and similar glowing 5 star reviews. Some of the reviews are even copy and pasted verbatim onto other rating sites like yelp. ITS SO SKETCHY, WTH? See, 8 out of 10 reviews on this page, and following pages: https://www.weddingwire.com/reviews/menguin/11cb63f3df63729b.html

It makes me feel reeeal weird about using them (and also REALLY CONFUSED as to how weddingwire allows this, its so damn blatant!). So uh... have any actual humans used menguin for suit rentals?

I haven't heard of this one but I got an email advertising theblacktux.com.. it looks cool!

I would be sketched out by the reviews too though.

Also, to further up my current annoyance and skepticism - they sent us 2 free trial codes, so FH decided to try one, and my mom used the 2nd code to reserve a suit for my dad to try. We requested them both to be shipped to my parent's house since my mom is the fit guru in our family. They just emailed me (3 days later) and refused to honor the 2nd code for my dad's suit and want him to pay $40 for his trial. Uh...

@Niki I just took at the reviews on our end and nothing is out of the ordinary - they all seem to be legitimate reviews!

WWKatie -- i dont mean to be rude, but im having a REALLY hard time believing that a dozen accounts who have all only reviewed menguin, had zero activity elsewhere on the site, and are all based in "North Pole, AK" are legit.. :l

they may have all originated from different IP addresses, but im going to presume it was probably from sites like MTurk where users post a job that pays something like a few dollars per job for users to post a review on a certain site.

They had a booth at the bridal fair I went to this past Sunday. Not going to lie the lady seemed sketchy, I even told my FH about it when I got home. She had me put down my info (not unusual) but was very unclear when I asked her what I was signing up for so I gave her a fake email. I don't know something about her just seemed off. They did give me a sweet bottle opener though.

I watched a YouTube video where a man reviewed several different tux/suit ordering sites. Let me see if I can find the link and if so I'll edit to add it!

Sorry this took me so long to find. No review on Menguin specifically, but two other company reviews:

@MNbride we got the sweet bottle opener, too.

We saw them at a bridal show as well, and all the guys there were helpful and made it sound so great. FH just doesn't love the fact they mail you the tux so close to the wedding.

I would not be put off by reviewers leaving only 1 review. Most of my couples did not find me on WW, but left me a review here because I asked. And they did not find their other vendors here so did not leave any other reviews.

Multiple reviews for the same date would not worry me either. I frequently officiate more than 1 wedding a day and a tux shop could dress multiple wedding parties -- especially if they have multiple locations.

What would cause me concern are the North Pole locations.

FYI - the North Pole is a users's default location if they don't fill one in when creating their profile! Some people who leave reviews on WW don't have a full profile set up with us (just name and email address so we can verify reviews) so it will default to the North Pole Smiley smile
