Has anyone removed mesh paneling?

Jenny, on June 17, 2019 at 9:59 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 1 8

Hi everyone! First time posting here, and I'm hoping someone has some advice/answers. I bought my dress as a sample off the rack, and it fits ALMOST like a glove--just have to have the shoulders taken in. The other thing is that there's a completely sheer mesh panel across my chest with a very small tear at the neckline. The women at the boutique assured me that it could be removed without a problem. I'm not very modest anyways and don't have much cleavage to cover up, so I feel completely comfortable without the mesh there. BTW this won't be a church wedding, so no one needs to get up in arms about the deep V. It will just be an evening cocktail party with all adults.

The only problem that I'm facing right now is that I just spoke with a seamstress on the phone to set up an alterations consultation, and she seemed adamant that you can't remove anything like that. She hasn't actually seen my dress yet, but I'm wary of bringing in the dress to her (and paying the $75 consultation charge) to risk her standing behind her initial reaction if there might be other seamstresses who would make the change that I'm looking for.

When we bought the dress, the saleswomen honestly didn't even hesitate about it being a solution to cut it out, so I'm a bit surprised that the seamstress reacted that way. The bodice really feels sculpted to my body, and it's sequins on tulle, so it's a bit stiff and structured--not like it's chiffon or soft silk or something. It's also snug at the waist and will be snug higher up once the shoulders are taken in.

Has anyone else done something similar? My other idea was just to have the cut of the mesh scoop down a bit (i.e. removing the small tear), but the seamstress seemed to think even that was impossible. Hoping someone has some guidance here! Everything else I read online are just about ADDING panels like this rather than removing them, so any advice is appreciated Smiley smile

First of all, that dress looks gorgeous! From a construction standpoint, it depends on how the mesh was added. If it’s one piece of mesh that wraps around as an outer layer of the dress, to which the sequins have been stitched on, it’s a trickier thing to remove. If it’s just an inset in the neckline, stitched to the inside of the dress, it shouldn’t be too hard to simply snip the stitching and remove it. If it’s stitched through the seaming that connects the outer layer to the lining, it’s a more involved process because they’d have to open up those seams, remove the mesh, and then close the seams back up. As an alternative, if removing it isnt an option, you could probably trim the mesh to a V that follows the neckline, but gives you some (controllable and customizable) amount of coverage. Would doing so get rid of the tear you mentioned?

I would call a few other dressmakers to see to see if someone thinks it can be done before paying for a consultation that’s stacked against your plan. Good luck!!

How high does the mesh go? It looks to me like there would be no structure holding the shoulders on and the V together without it. You might show more than you bargained for if you twist or bend the wrong way. I would instead be asking the seamstress about replacing it with an untorn piece that maintains the integrity of the dress.

Welcome to the WeddingWire community, Jenny!

Your dress is gorgeous Smiley love

Is this seamstress someone the bridal store recommended? If not, perhaps you could ask them who they recommend. If they were sure it could be removed, they must have some knowledge!

It could be a good idea to ask around a few seamstresses and get their advice on whether or not it can be done. As you said, you may find someone who will, and avoid spending the $75 consultation fee with the seamstress who has said she won't do it.

Sounds like you need a second (or even third) opinion on this. If the mesh is part of the structure of the dress, it may be more difficult to remove. But there's probably a solution. It sounds like the seamstress you are currently talking to is a negative nelly, who doesn't want to explore a solution to this problem. So, I would ditch her and find someone else.

Thank you all for your advice last week! Sorry for the delay... I didn't have notifications turned on and didn't realized people had replied!

Anyways, I was able to get ahold of the seamstress that the boutique had recommended, and I'm going to see her instead of the original woman. She previously hadn't gotten back to me, but now I'd rather go with her than the other one I found online. She also expressed a bit of concern, but she didn't act as dire about it. I think we'll be able to find a compromise between the tear and the structure of the dress and just trim out a bit of the mesh without removing all of it. There's hope yet Smiley kiss

And this one won't be charging me $75 just to take a look at it!
