Has anyone had a taco bar at their reception?

Rosie, on June 1, 2018 at 10:28 AM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 9

Hey all! Pretty new here but I love lurking!

We are having a somewhat casual backyard wedding next March. Originally, we wanted to have a couple food trucks, but it's been difficult getting straight answers/quotes from any in our area. There are, however, some great taco places near us that do catering. I'm picturing like a build your own taco buffet type thing, but I'm sure there are pros and cons that I'm not thinking about, so I'd love any advice you guys have.

Has anyone done a taco bar type deal? Or really any kind of build your own type thing? What were some of the issues you ran into? As I said, our wedding will be pretty casual and small (around 50 guests), so I was thinking a serve yourself type thing would work? Is that crazy? Will it be a hot mess?

Thanks in advance!

I’m doing this my welcome dinner that I expect around 50 people at! I actually just had a taco bar at work for a lunch party for 80 people and it was totally fine! It took a little while to get everyone through the line but people are adults and can use their patience.

I think that's a great idea. As long as your caterer keeps the tortillas and other ingredients fresh sounds yummy and fun!

My best friend had a build-your-own taco bar at her wedding. It was fantastic. There were enough options so that it could appease everyone - vegetarian, dairy free, gluten free, etc. We didn't have the station being supervised.

Thanks guys! This is giving me more confidence in the taco bar idea, especially having it be self-serve! Yay!

We haven't had ours yet, but we're doing a taco bar. The venue does it all the time and it's self serve. We have some gluten/dairy free people on our list (like severe allergies) so we just have to make sure things aren't touching, but other than that it should be great. I actually didn't want to do a Friday reception, but when the venue coordinator said we could do tacos Friday but not Saturday I was sold lol!

Great idea Rosie! If it is outside, depending on your location, March shouldn't be too bad for all the yummiest taco fixings! It is a great option for vegetarian guests as well!

Your reception idea made me think of a great WeddingWire article:

My area has a lot of humidity, so hard shell tacos would get soggy here. My wedding is coming up in March as well, and we're following a similar idea with a potato and salad bar. Tacos sound great, as long as the ingredients can be kept hot and any toppings kept cold!
