We decided on a semi/nearly naked cake, but now I'm starting to worry that without the icing covering the entire cake, the cake will become dry. Did anyone with this type of cake have any issues?

My naked cake was still moist out of the box throughout our honeymoon. I've also had iced dry cakes. it is literally a styling preference and if you get a good baker, they are a good baker regardless of how the decorations look.

Naked cakes look like the baker ran out of icing. Tacky. Get the caked iced.
I personally love naked cakes. Not getting one myself but I had to jump in and say I think they are beautiful. No cakes should be drying out regardless of the icing. Keep your head up Bailey your wedding is going to be beautiful.
I will jump in here, I do like the look and visual simplicity of naked cakes, it does take a talented baker to pull off the layers and keep it moist. I also like the marshmallow fondant. Not the nasty pasty crap. I think you need to find a baker that specialises in the naked cake look.

Well I personally love them and plan on having one. I realize they are not most people's taste but I could care less. We met with our baker and she explained that they won't do a truly naked cake because they will dry, however they do do semi-naked cakes so that they stay moist. Hope that helps.
These comments! Where is my popcorn? Sorry I've never had a naked cake, so I don't know if it's dry or moist. But glad to see you sticking to your guns and getting what you want!
Haha, good thing I have a thick skin. My FH and I love what we chose, and a few unwarranted comments from strangers on the internet isn't going to change our opinion. We've just been laughing all night at all the nastiness posted.
Honestly I think they look pretty cool. This first time I saw one I was thinking wtheck, but then I was like that's kinda creative and I for one don't like a lot of frosting, especially piled on..yuck. Sounds like you just have to find a bombass moist cake baker and just roll with it. It's your wedding
I'd rather have a tub of frosting as my "cake"....
@Swin.... All I need is syrup and I would love your cake for breakfast..it looks like thick stuffed pancakes lol. So good!!!
I personally don't like the look of naked cakes and think that trend needs to go away.. I bake a lot of cakes and it drives bonkers when a tiny bit of cake crumb or cake shows...
And uh......fondant is peeled off??? Since when?? Where on earth did you hear that..
I just don't get it...as a baker, I guess I would be like "sweet I'm getting paid big bucks for an unfinished job"

I have had dry as fuck fondant covered cakes and moist naked cakes. It's just how good and experienced the baker is. I welcome any variation in wedding cakes that involves less frosting and no fondant. Everyone has their likes and dislikes and none of them are more valid than others.
I LOVE naked cakes. I think they are absolutely gorgeous, especially for rustic themed weddings and topped with flowers or berries. I honestly think they are much prettier than frosted cakes when done right. Bonus: FH and i both hate frosting and it makes me horribly ill, so I'd be super excited about a naked cake at a wedding.
Don't have any feedback about the dryness, but it shouldn't be sitting out long enough to really get dry I would think. I just wanted to validate your naked/semi naked choice after all the negativity towards it
Goodness gracious. You would think people are talking about politics and not about what kind of cake OP wants to have for her wedding. As long as the baker makes it that day/the day before depending on your time frame you should be fine as long as its stored. When you do a cake trial just have your baker do a trial of the naked cake and ask them when they will bake it and decide that way =]
Reference: I make cakes ( hobby) and can leave them out ( a day or a couple hours not like a while) and not get dry af like everyone is freaking out about, also I've had dry cupcakes/cakes that were literally covered in icing so its kind of a crap shoot and depends on the baker.
Good luck!
Also. If I was a guest I would eat a dry cake and not even be mad.
