Has anyone even heard of a "parents dance"?

Finally mrs.jkr, on April 28, 2015 at 1:01 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 17

My mom was worried that I would make her be part of a "parents dance" which she explained as after the first dance the bride and groom dance to another song, while their parents also dance together. I have no idea where she got this idea (I've never heard of it) and don't know why she would think I'd do it.. Both of our sets of parents are divorced with animosity due to mental illness issues, abuse, and cheating. She keeps hounding me about making sure I don't cause drama and I want to shove a chill pill down her throat (sorry that turned into a rant, but are parent dances even a thing?)

I've never heard of this or seen it. The only thing I can think of close to this is the couples dance where people who are married come up and they slowly dwindle it based on how long each couple has been married. Tell your mom its not a thing and to relax.

Oh I wasn't planning on doing it. I swear she must be googling obscure traditions that could cause drama in our family and she's freaking out telling me not to do a bunch of things I wasn't planning on doing, and then she thinks that I'm lying to quiet her even though I really was never planning on those things

It'd be cute for couples with happily married parents but I've never heard of it and definitely wouldn't be able to do it at my wedding lol If it is a thing it's not a super common or universal one she has nothing to worry about.

Mrs pope- if it works for your family! Smiley smile I actually think it's a cute idea if both your parents are still married and happy

Ditto what Melissa said. Your mom needs to relax.

I've also seen it at weddings, but it's hardly a requirement.

I think this used to be a tradition, but it is fairly uncommon now since there are so many divorced families.

I saw this at a friend's wedding two summers ago, but I agree, it's not a requirement by any means!

Anniversary dances are quite common where they ask all the married couples to come out and dance and slowly they ask people who have been married X amount of years to sit down until it gets to the longest married couple. But I've never seen just a parents dance.

I have seen it at larger, formal weddings.

There's a section on my dj's site that we use to pick our songs. He has under special songs or something like that, first dance, father daughter, mother son, etc. Then he has parents dance. I never knew what it was so I never added a song. I guess they may be a thing but people may not know about them. They're probably not necessary though

I've never heard of that and I am 55. I am also of the opinion that the fewer spotlight dances the better. Anything more than first dance, father/daughter, and mother/son is just torture for the guests. Watching dance after dance while you are supposed to sit their quietly and think how beautiful the 4th or 5th one is awful.

I've never heard of that as a tradition. Maybe as a sweet gesture if both your parents have been married a long time. Hopefully you can get her to calm down!

I've heard of it but never seen it done. I think unless your parents want a little bit of spotlight or love to dance, skip it!
