Has anyone else had to have their dress taken in 2 sizes?

Angie, on April 5, 2013 at 8:46 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 18

I found THE dress yesterday! I'm so excited. Its Maggie Sottero's London. Absolutely beautiful, comfortable...I never thought I'd never want to take off a dress, but I really didn't!

About two hours after I placed my order, I got a call that the dress has been discontinued so the sample dress I tried will be the one I'm getting. Its a size 10; I need an 8. It has a corset-back.

Has anyone else run into this sort of situation? how did your dress turn out?

My dress was a sample, and it was about 3 sizes too big. But it also had a corset back, and that helped a lot. So they only had to adjust boobs part of the dress, because the rest was solved by the corset back. So you should be fine!

Congrats on finding the dress, that's exciting :-)

Same here. I needed a 2 and they only had the one in a 6. No corset on mine so more to take in. Thankfully my dress is simple.

    Congratulations on finding the "one!"

I haven’t had a personal experience with this yet… I still need to get my dress altered BUT…

My girlfriend got her dress altered from a size 12 to 0!! I do recall it being stressful and expensive but it all worked out, and it fit her like a glove!

Another one of my girlfriends got her dress altered from a 4 to a 0. I believe the seamstress told her if it was a size bigger it wouldn’t have worked.

So I think you’ll be fine! And yes it does suck having size 0 friends, haha.

This is not uncommon. A great seamstress specializing in Bridal Alterations can do anything. This is most likely to happen if you buy off the rack and it's too late to order your dress.

If you bought a corset back..you are only talking about going down one dress size.

They should be able to take it in no problem but it could be pricey depending on how complex the dress is. To take mine in from a 4 to a 2 would have been over $200 just for that portion of alterations.

It is actually a pretty easy fix with it being just two sizes. I would talk to a tailor and probably not one at the dress store.

I've lost enough weight between buying the dress and picking it up that I'll need mine taken in, more than 2 sizes by november. They seamstress told me with the cut and style of the dress it's no problem. If a seamstress tells you it can be done, trust her.

Corset back dresses are easier to take in. Two sizes shouldn't really be a problem and the skirt on the dress is the kind that wont have any size issues so you should be totally fine!

I needed a size 4 waist but it wouldn't zip up past "my girls". So I had to buy a 6 and have it taken in. I think you'll be just fine.

Thanks ladies! I called them and they said they are getting it professionally cleaned and resized for me free of charge! The only alterations I'll have to pay for is adding a bustle and adding additional bust support/bra, however that goes!

I definitely picked the right people to go with, my mom, my cousin and one of my bridesmaids. None of them are domineering, which I needed because I can sometimes melt under pressure. I thanked them all by buying them lunch, which we ate at the store. My bridesmaid made us all barrettes, theirs in my wedding colors (silver, purple and teal) and mine a mini veil.

It wound up being the 4th dress I tried on. The first one didn't have enough bling, the second I couldn't stand the lace, the 3rd was one I'd considered (Maggie's Victoriana), but my bridesmaid pointed out that I'd chafe my arms on the beading and probably lose some of it. My mom made a joke to the girls that we'd know it was the one when I quit talking. She was right! I came out in London and couldn't stop staring. I kept looking back at the other dresses we'd pulled...then back. It hit me that I didn't want to try any other dresses on. It REALLY hit me when the veil was added (and seeing the price tag of the veil--nearly $200--that I was NOT going to buy a veil yet lol). I really did nearly cry when I thought of marrying my sweetheart in the dress. Its the one I've been dreaming of. The saleslady was excellent, I definitely recommend Hart's Tux and Gown to anyone.

Once they got me out of my dress, we looked through the bridesmaid and prom dresses. Cont.

We found some that we like but are about double what my girls can spend. Its a good that we found what we want though, we know its out there. We found a black prom dress with heavy, large beading on the top, a slit on the side and animal print inside. Told Mom we'd found her mother of the bride dress! She was NOT impressed, lol. But she did find a dress she liked. We'll go up sometime and do serious shopping for her, I'm buying her dress for her Christmas present.
