Has anyone attended wedding with string quartet for entire wedding?

ALH, on December 14, 2015 at 9:30 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 14

Including the reception, without a DJ? Just a string quartet playing entire day/night? If so, was it super boring? Did people get up and dance? Or was it more like a dinner party than a regular reception party?

I haven't, but I absolutely cannot envision myself dancing and partying to a string quartet. Maybe in my previous life in 1920. ETA: that came out a lot snottier than I meant it to sound! But seriously, I can't picture that.

I really think this could be so lovely, but I see it through the ceremony and dinner, with a DJ picking up after dinner for dancing. I think it would be so beautiful, though!!

My cousin had an Irish flute and fiddle quinquet play. 1 irish flute, 1 other wind instrument, a cello, a fiddle, and a drummer/pianist (changed depending on the song. same guy 2 instruments).

They played irish riverdance type music and we all line danced (cousin and her husband are from texas) It fit them, but it depends on the person/time of day/formality

It would be for a small (50 person) wedding, plated dinner at a B&B. FH and I are not into partying and at the last wedding we attended (for his cousin), 20% of the attendees were dancing (of 100). I want to do something for guests to dance to but not a DJ and huge party. We are both extremely introverted and quiet so that's why I thought string quartet. But if not, any suggestions?

Hmm. Maybe a band instead of a DJ?

That could work, but it would depend on how adept they are at playing, for lack of a better description, "Vitamin String" music. I think classical for the whole thing might be a little sedate....

I love the idea. But what about string quartet for the wedding and jazz quartet for the reception?

My cousin did this. I was 20 and just remember no one really dancing. It just didn't have the get up and party vibe.

I love string quartets! They are completely apropos for a cocktail hour but perhaps not so much for a reception where you want people to dance. Any kind of music being played without vocals and/or percussion runs the risk of being background music. Best of luck with wedding plans! Xoxo

I've photographed a handful of weddings that had string quartets during the entire time. All of them had these things in common :

    - small, intimate space that accommodated less than 100 people

    - the quartet moved 2x. At one place for the ceremony and then another for cocktail hour and dinner

-both classical and more current/trendy music was played

-people did dance but it was to all the slow music

    -an adult only guest list

-everything was done inside of 4 hours; ceremony, cocktails, meal and toasts.

-some were during the day and others at night.

-they were all beautiful and there was a lot of laughter.

-the couple and guests all stayed in close proximity to each other even though the venue had additional rooms/patios open.

What did you end up doing? I'm planning my wedding for next Jan ... I feel like if the quartet plays pop etc. And we dance then others will? We're getting married at the science museum and just want a classy formal vibe but for people to still dance and have fun! They keep all of the exhibits open for the entire night for us too so we have it as kid friendly - we don't drink but olan on having an open bar that's fully non alcoholic but still all the choices ... im mostly wondering if anyone will still dance or just leave being bored because we'll have 'late night'after dinner food stations that I'd hate to not have eaten 😂
