Handing out slippers to guests during reception?

mrswinteriscoming, on June 23, 2021 at 6:39 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 18

I was talking to my aunt last night about my upcoming wedding and she suggested we consider having slippers given out during the night for guests to wear in place of their heels/dress shoes. She said she had seen this at a wedding she went to pre-COVID which was similar to ours (grand black-tie wedding with lots of dancing) and that it went down a treat.

Has anyone done this, or is considering this? If you’ve seen it or done it before – did your guests appreciate this? Who handed out the slippers and when during the night did they do this?

I’ve seen this done before with flip flops! Here’s a picture of it set up on the corner of the dance floor Handing out slippers to guests during reception? 1

We had flip flops for guests to wear if they wanted and to be honest not a lot of guests actually took them. We had ours in two baskets on the little stage our DJ was set up on with a sign.

I had a friend who did a display at the reception with nude women’s flats. I did not partake in it, but she did say quite a few other guests did! I’ll look to see if I still have a photo of it

I've seen similar baskets at weddings with cheap flip flops and no one used them.

She said they were called Rescue Flats! This isn’t from her wedding, but these were the same boxes she had

Same. This seems like such an unnecessary waste of money to me. But I may be biased because I only buy shoes I can dance in, and they are part of my outfit, so I don't take mine off until I get home.

I saw this once at a wedding and it was a dud. The bride got flip flops which are very difficult to dance in because the shoes grip the floor and your foot goes the other direction. Those were tossed out by the 2 or 3 people who grabbed them in favor of most women dancing barefoot.

Save your money and put it towards food/bar/dj that guests notice and remember or photo/video for your own memories.

Haven't been to a wedding with them before, but two years in a row my company Christmas party had them. Absolutely loved the idea. One year was a gold pair and the next was silver pair. They were perfect bc they also came with a shoe bag for your other shoes. Once done for the night the ballet slippers roll up and have a nice carrying bag (that also holds the good shoe bag). I cannot say how much they cost as I was not part of the planning committee. They were placed in large baskets at the corners of the dance floor. Still bring a pair to parties today!

Thank you all for your feedback, I really appreciate it. The general consensus is that while some guests may love the idea, it may not be worth pursuing this on the whole, so I think we might just leave this as is and not go through with it.

I agree. I would never wear a pair of shoes to a wedding in the first place that I wouldn't be able to keep on (and dance in) all night. I personally would never want to "ruin" my outfit with a pair of cheap flip-flops.

We will be doing this! We're having a few boxes of rescue flats in various sizes for female guests. We're not going to be handing them out per se, but they will be at a central location near the dance floor for guests to take. We're having a black tie wedding with a lot of dancing and as a guest, I've seen this done before at tons of other weddings and I always used them.

Out of curiosity, do these grip less than regular flip flops making it easier to dance? Or are your feet not going anywhere with the rubber on the bottom?

In my experience the grip is pretty similar to flip flops, but these are more like satin loafers. The difference is purely aesthetic (in my mind at least)

Rescue flats don’t “grip” like those plastic/foam-y material flip flops (hate those things!). They are comparable to just a basic woman’s flats

Ah good to know! Never seen them in person so I had no idea! I am with you on the regular flip flops.. hate them! And they are impossible to walk in, much less dance.

Agreed! I don’t know how anybody could possibly dance in those monstrosities. I would break my ankle for sure!
