Handfasting vs. Unity Knot

D Ross, on March 9, 2020 at 1:47 PM Posted in Wedding Ceremony 1 4

Has anyone done or is planning to tie a unity knot THEN do a handfasting with it? I can't decide between the two. A little background: I'm black so we will be jumping the broom. He's white and we're pretty sure hes of Irish descent (although he hasn't done his ancestry Smiley xd ) Anyway, my engagement ring is a claddagh, so I would like some Irish bit in there somewhere, hence the handfasting. Also, I'm a believer and he is not. But he's not opposed to having a religious element in the ceremony as well, thus the unity knot. It's a destination-ish wedding (out of state), and we'll only have about 20 guests. The only other thing I was planning was maybe a reading. That could be from literature, earlier in the ceremony, or from the Bible during the knot tying. I don't want too short a ceremony, but will this be doing too much? I'm shooting for the ceremony to be 15-30 minutes.

Hey there, D Ross! This sounds like a great idea, using the unity knot to do the handfasting!

Have you ever heard of a ring warming ceremony? This is less religious and supposedly is an old Irish tradition. What happens is that the rings are passed around the guests during the ceremony and everyone has the opportunity to hold and pass a wish, blessing or prayer for your marriage. With such a small group also this is feasible. There is lots of information online about it if you would like to read up more!

Thank you for the info. Unfortunately, FH said he's not in love with the idea. Oh well, at least we're still jumping the broom.

I love your ideas! We plan on doing a handfasting too. Have you seen the handfastings that actually make the knot? You can wrap the cords/ribbons in a way that when you and FH pull your hands back it creates an infinity knot.

Yes, I thought it was pretty cool and meaningful, but FH isn't into it at all, so we're not going to do it.Smiley sad At least he was honest about it. I wouldn't want him to just "go along with it".
