Hand writing (print, not cursive) addresses on invites

Mrs. Lav, on February 16, 2015 at 3:14 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 25

Is this okay? FH and I want to use navy envelopes and write on them with gold gel pen. His cursive is better than mine (I don't think mine has improved since fourth grade), but I'm probably going to be the one doing the addressing. I do have pretty neat print.

Is print too informal? I could do the thing where we run the envelopes through the printer in a light ink and then trace, but that seems overly difficult.

I would love to encounter the person who says "puh, I'm not attending this wedding because of the handwriting on the part of the invitation I'm definitely throwing out"

In other words, as long as its neat enough to get the invitation to them, you're fine lol

I read on another thread on here that if the handwriting is too fancy the machines at the post office may not read the addresses correctly and some guests may not receive the invitation. I would say cursive but nothing too fancy.

I think you are fine. I generally print when it comes to something I'm posting anyway because the last thing you want is for the postman to struggle to read it. As Janeen says, I can't see someone having an issue because of handwriting!

I think its fine, but along the same lines as what FMP said, make sure the machine will read the gold on navy. Even if you hand cancel, it may still be a problem.

I think either print or cursive is fine honestly I can't remember most of the envelopes wedding invitations come in I keep all our friends invites but the envelope isn't something that sticks out to me

I think you're fine. Handwritten puts a nice personalized touch on them.

Elyse, good point about the dark envelopes. Sigh-- I really want them, though. Maybe we'll do blue on gold instead.

I hand wrote all the inner envelopes. I tried cheating at first by running the navy blue envelopes through the printer with dark ink that I could trace over in gold pen. It did not work - the printer generally skewed it all to hell and back and ended up ruining a couple envelopes.

I finally gave up and did the best I could with my handwriting - most of them came out okay, a few others were less pretty but I finally decided it wasn't worth stressing out over.

I didn't give a crap about doing the hand lettering on the outer envelope - I wanted the machines to be able to read the addresses and I wanted my compass watermark on it so those got printed and I definitely did not give a hoot.

Enya, what color were your outer envelopes? FH and I aren't fancy enough/are too cheap to use inner envelopes.

For my envelopes I'm planning to do cursive for the names and print for the addresses. I think you'll be fine with just printing. I notice and appreciate when I get a beautifully addressed envelope but I don't care or judge if it isn't.

I had planned on doing black envelopes with gold writing and after my fiasco at the post office last week I am going to stick with black and white. I think the main reason the post office would not send my envelopes is because I had the zip code on the far far right, up against the edge. I guess the machine read from the middle and the zip code was too far off center. Well at least that is what the woman at the PO said.

I think your idea sounds fine but I would bring an example into the post office of the gold on the navy to make sure it is readable for them. Redoing envelopes sucks....

Test run one with the post office but I'm a huge fan of print for addresses no matter the occasion. Maybe because my eyesight sucks and most cursive looks like squiggles to me. Or because our post office is rubbish and unless it's printed (printer printed) or hand written in block print, there is a 99% chance it'll get lost in the system.

I was trying to find more info on the USPS FAQs page and it was zero help.

I hand wrote the addresses on the envelopes (nothing fancy). I figured most people look at the envelope once, and that's it. But the return address was totally a sticker on the back.

I second MissGeek's advice to take one by your local post office. Using dark envelopes with metallic writing may be difficult for their machined process, which may increase your postage. I typically recommend against using dark envelopes unless you plan on using labels for addresses.

They were 'kraft' colored - rustic looking I guess?

I think printing is fine. The main purpose is to get it to who it needs to get to, so as long as it's neat it's fine. The envelope is usually tossed anyway.
