Hand Sanitizer and Gold

Shelby, on February 29, 2016 at 5:25 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 5

I'm a nurse, so I use tons of hand sanitizer. My FH proposed with a wedding band, and I like it because it is practical for working in my field because I won't scratch people, get tons of gross stuff in it etc but can still wear it to work. But it hit me tonight as I was rubbing Germ-X on my hands for the 200th time, will heavy use of hand sanitizer hurt my ring? It's 14k gold, will it tarnish or turn color? I don't know much about that subject. Should I just leave my ring at home?

ETA: My ring is 14k white gold

I think you should be fine. If it was white gold (yellow gold that is dipped) you might have problems. I'm in healthcare as well and use sanitizer/wash my hand a thousand times a day. So far it hasn't effected my platinum

My ring is white gold! Guess I should fix that. I wasn't even thinking about the different types, just knew that mine is 14k.

I'm also a nurse that uses massive amounts of hand sanitizer at work. I wear a yellow gold ring on my right hand and have for 23 years. It has never affected the look or color. My ering is rose gold and I have been wearing it to work for a year. I have not noticed any changes with it either.

If the finish does rub off a white gold ring, you can have it 'redipped' every few years in rhodium to restore the color. Your jeweler may offer the service free or at a discount if you bought from them. Otherwise, I've been quoted about $70 per 'redip'.
