Hair Up for Ceremony, Down for Reception

Christine, on October 23, 2019 at 7:10 PM Posted in Hair and Makeup 1 13
Hi there!! I know there have been a lot of posts on this topic in the past but unfortunately, not as many pictures to go along with.

Has anyone done an updo for their wedding ceremony and then let it down for the reception?

I am doing a traditional Lao ceremony and it’s customary to wear the hair up in a tight bun. I’d like to compromise and do a loose bun and then let my hair down when I change into my white dress. If I was just wearing my white dress, I’d have it down all day.

I’d LOVE to see some before and after pictures! Attached is a picture of me in my wedding dress and the second picture is a traditional Lao dress and hairstyle. Thank you!!

Ok so I was planning on this !!! I bought a magic bun maker to do it myself but I ended up not doing it because updo looked horrible on me aha. BUT the magic bun maker really makes it easy to go from updo to down or vice versa

I’m doing a Lao wedding as well! But two separate days. My lao wedding is this Saturday, the 27th! Eep! Then the American one on Sunday, Nov 3. Yup. 9 days...anyways. I plan to do the bun in the morning and wear all the fancy Lao stuff and then change into a white dress at night and let my hair down. I might even let my hair down when I go around passing shots and all. Congrats to you and that dress is so gorgeous on you. 😍

Hi Nikki!! Wow, I’m so happy to hear you’re doing one as well!! You’ll have to share some pictures after the big day...I’d love to see them!! Unfortunately, the customary tight bun isn’t flattering on my face so I’m hoping to find an updo that I’ll like but will also be easily taken out and something that is appropriate culturally (am I asking for too much?? Lol).

That’s a great idea Nikki!! I have one and I may just play around with it and see how my hair looks like down a few hours later. Thanks so much!

Your dress is beautiful. I know some of the hairstylists I looked into had a "2nd style" or "touch up" option. This was basically an additional fee for them to return however many hours later and change your hairstyle for you at your venue. This might be worth looking into so that you don't have to stress about doing it yourself.

I tryed to look up some pictures but there really is isn't much out there LOL! I did find one with a low messy bun but im not sure if thats what you would be going for. And the second "idea" i found was if you have it in a high bun for the ceremony and then let your hair down from the bun but keep it in a high pony?? I know if it were my hair it would be a kinky mess once i let it out of the bun Smiley xd so i thought this would maybe work if your hair is similar

I think that's fine, as long as your hair stylist could do a quick switch & you could fit it into your timeline?

Wow thank you so much for doing some research! It’s hard to find pics isn’t it?? I love the first one! I just booked my hairstylist and will likely schedule a trial sooner than what’s normal just so that I can see what it looks like and make a decision!! I’ve also thought about just doing a mermaid braid since it gives me the best of both worlds. We’ll see! I’ll post a pic of my final decision!

Yes! I heard taking out pins takes longer than one thinks but maybe if I have someone help me it’ll go by quicker. I will be doing a dress change anyways Smiley smile. Thank you for your response!

I would be careful. It can definitely work well if done right, but I know with my hair when it’s been up for a bit, when I take it down it’s got a ton of weird kinks in it where it was being held up. Also, if there’s a ton of product keeping the “up-do” in place it could look strange when taken down. I don’t know all of what goes into achieving the traditional hairstyle you’re planning to do, but it looks line a lot from the picture xD
