HAIR QUESTION: WEAR VEIL IN FRONT OF UPDO OR BEHIND?

AmyMarie, on November 24, 2009 at 1:19 PM Posted in Planning 0 9

When I first got my dress, the consultant put my hair up in a bun (up-do) and put a single tier veil BEHIND it and it looked very nice. I have decided to wear my hair up in that fashion but I am undecided as to wear my now double-tier veil behind or in front of my up-do. I do plan on having the veil over my face and having my FH lift it for the kiss. I have also tried to find pics online but they all seem to show just the up-do's without a veil. Any suggestions?

It's totally personal preference. I've seen it done both ways. When you get your hair done, especially if you do a trial run, try the veil on both ways and see which way YOU like it best.

I know what you are saying that it is common sense BUT I was just curious as to wether there were any trends going on that I needed to know about. Just like now-a-days you see many brides wearing the shorter bird-cage style veils or non at all.

That's a tough one....I can't say that I've noticed particular trends when it comes to veils, other that the one you mentioned about the birdcage styles suddenly being "in"....it seems like it's all up in the air for each girl to decide. Here are 2 shots of updo's with one over and one under double-veil positioning:

my PERSONAL opinion....I like OVER much better.

I think it just depends on what you like and how you are wearing your hair. I had originally planned to have my hair in an updo (a bun type low on the back of my head) and I was going to have the veil on under it. I didn't want the veil to cover the style that I had my hair in. Lots of brides remove the veil after the ceremony and pics anyway so even if you wear it above the bun, you can take it off later to show your hair style better.

One thing to consider is that since you are doing the blusher, if it is under the bun it might look awkward when you have it pulled up and over your head, if you know what I mean? I've seen it done but I think it lays much nicer when it's over the bun so that the blusher part lays right on your head and face

AmyMarie, wear it on top of your bun for the ceremony b/c i think it will look better that way if you intend to wear it covering your face. Then have someone to put it underneath for the reception. That way your lovely hairstyle shows!

Is your veil two separate layers or one? If it's two you could have them separated and put on two combs and wear one in front and one behind.

If they can't be separated you'll probably like the way it looks if worn in front - only because it can look a bit awkward if worn in back and then pulled over your updo to be your blusher. I think you need to play with it and look in the mirror from all angles.

Thanks to you all for your ideas and advice. My dress is being altered as we speak so I will have to do my hair up the way I think I will like it and then put the veil on. Then I will also have to just visualize what it will look like with the dress on.
