Guests sending back RSVP with adding children onto RSVP to Adult Only Reception

Katlynn, on June 4, 2019 at 2:34 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 13
We sent out our invites and both the main invites and RSVP both state Adult Only Reception. However I'm getting back cards where people are still writing in their kids as attending. What's the proper etiquette to deal with this?

"I apologize for any confusion, the invitation was intended for person1 and person2 only. Unfortunately, we cannot accommodate any extra guests. We hope that you can still come celebrate with us, but please let us know if this changes your RSVP."

Oh god. It's like people either don't read it thoroughly or they want to do whatever they want. I had Same thing happen where a guest was only allotted himself and yet he added a plus one.

This. Exactly. No room for arguing if someone does try to argue just say
Okay I'll mark you as cannot attend thanks. And end the conversation

We got one back like this and I ended up calling and just saying “hi we are excited to have you joining us on our special day, we look forward to seeing you but unfortunately we are doing an adults only ceremony and reception as we are openly serving alcohol throughout the night” they completely understood and attended

On my invitations I wrote the following and I feel like it could work for this as well....

"although we love your children we unfortunately cannot accommodate them at the venue due to restricted numbers...we hope you will see this as an opportunity to let your hair down and enjoy the party with us!"

I'd just follow up and emphasize that it is an adults only event. Perhaps provide info for a local babysitter for the event! That way if they are traveling they can use someone reccomended in an area close to the venue.

I like Catlyn's wording because it is universal, meaning people who insert their kids or a plus one. I myself would probably be petty about it and change the response a bit saying we cannot accommodate your children as we stated it is an adult only reception, etc. I mean you literally wrote it twice. I think that calls for me calling a guest out for not reading/ignoring a simple direction lol!

I feel like I’d do the exact same thing 😂 to the point where I might just have FH or my mom handle people who RSVPs for extra people because I will not hold back.

I agree with all of this! I would only add that you do this over a phone call or in person. Most people aren't as bold with their behavior of they have to talk to you directly, not over text or message, meaning they'll probably snap out of it pretty quick! Good luck!
