Guests changing their RSVP

Alyssa B., on March 7, 2017 at 3:12 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 23

I just wanted to know if it was common for guests to change their RSVP? So far I've had 7 guests to initially RSVPd yes switch to no.

I didn't have this happen at all.

    Are there any special circumstances?

I've never heard of this, but at least they let you know they weren't coming, instead of just not showing up

Do you mean actual RSVPs, or like they originally gave a verbal yes but now have gotten an invitation and said no?

One family stated they we're unaware of how much it would cost to travel to the wedding while the other two said they were no longer able to attend.

7 is a big number, I had a couple switch to a No RSVP b/c their sitter bailed on them. I also had my cousin let me know her husband will no longer be able to attend due to work. I'm just glad they let me know vs just pulling a no show

I just wouldn't count anything as an actual RSVP until they send the physical RSVP in Smiley smile

We did have a lot of last minute RSVP changes, but they were due to the hurricane that happened that weekend on the east coast! Several guests cancelled last minute because they didn't think they'd be able to get there, but we also had guests who were a "no" become a "yes" because they were forced to evacuate anyway Smiley smile

I just had a cousin message me saying she can't come anymore, but she had a legitimate reason. And one of FH"s friends answered his text saying he's coming then later that day said he wasn't. It's not unheard of, but would be weird if it was a large number of guests I suppose.

Huh. I would have thought people would check on travel costs before RSVPing yes in the first place...

This hasn't happened to me (yet) and I don't imagine it will. Sorry you are dealing with this but at least you haven't paid for them yet!!

Invitations we're due a few weeks ago (we live in a place where the hotels are always packed during the spring time and we wanted to be sure people could get hotels before RSVPing and we made this clear) so it's odd to me to change their minds after turning in their RSVP. I suppose it is better than them not showing up.

Hmm that's definitely weird, but seems like the risk you can run with an earlier RSVP date! It's definitely better that you know now!

My guess is they rushed to get the RSVP in because your date was so early and then when they looked at arrangements after the fact they saw it was too expensive for them.

Luckily your RSVP date is probably wayyy before your final numbers are due so you should be fine.

I guess if it is really a hard no from a yes count yourself lucky. I had more than a couple of handful of people reply yes but not come at all. I would say their no would be a good thing to learn now if you hadn't gotten your final numbers in yet. I guess if you have then yeah get upset. Ha. It's annoying but it does happen quiet frequently.

I received physical RSVPs of yes that turned into no's. Twice. The first time it was before we paid, but the second it was after. Luckily my venue and planner worked with us, but it was a pain!

We got a few yes's that turned to no's for children and plus ones. Most of the couples decided not to bring their children after learning that a few couples weren't going to bring their's and some of our single friends RSVPed with a plus one and ended up not having anyone to bring.

Not to me but FH and I had to cancel on his cousins wedding (it was a destination wedding) after RSVPing yes because got called in for training. His dad also had to change from yes to no because he was sent away for work and wouldn't be able to get back. Things come up last minute, it sucks but it happens. And the cost I understand too because they could have been excited and said yes but didn't realize the cost of they needed flights/hotel/renting cars

I'd be glad they let me know instead of just not showing up and I paid for their meal.

Happened to me with one couple - they did call to explain the circumstances though.
