UGH. I think this is my LEAST favorite part of planning. The guest list. I have a massive family. My dad's side alone has 106 people! How the heck do you make cuts. I feel like I would prefer to make cuts to my dad's family first since it is so large. Do you have a kid-free wedding? Not give plus ones? Cut second cousins? I need ideas for sure. How does your family/friends react to your guest list cuts?

To cut our guest list, we limited family to parents, siblings, aunts, uncles, 1st cousins, and friends we've known for at least 5 years and were in contact with regularly. We only gave +1's to guests if they were married or engaged. Those who were dating received a +1 if we met their significant other AND they had been dating for at least 1 year. We also had an adult only ceremony and reception. We did get flack for this, but for liability reasons, we stood our ground. We had an open bar, and IMPO, parents CANNOT be effective parents AND drink. We chose not to provide daycare solely on the risk(s) of children. Our reception had WAY too many non-child friendly amenities. Following these rules, we cut our guest list down by 75.

Speaking as an attorney, if you are going to have children at your reception, I highly recommend getting liability insurance. This covers you should a child be injured.

I would not completely rely on that 80% RSVP as that is an average some people have 100% reply yes others have less than 80% say yes.
Is your venue limited to about 161? If so don't forget to count yourselfs in the headcount and only invite below that number. You don't want to have people surprise you and end up with more guests than you expected/can handle. Also there will be people who show up day of that didn't reply yes.
