Guest List Size in Upstate ny

Elizabeth, on July 15, 2020 at 11:55 PM Posted in New York Planning 0 7
Hi, fellow NY brides! My wedding is September 20th, but my fiance and I are still confused about how many people we're allowed to invite (in the Syracuse area we're in phase 4). Are you following the 50 guests max rule, or is your venue following the restaurant 50% capacity rule?

Mine said its 50 people. From my understanding, its not yet legal to do the 50% capacity thing in NY yet. That will come after phase 4. Mine “offered” us to do a 100 person wedding and call it something other than a wedding so we dont get in trouble. Sketchy at best

I just saw another NY bride posting about this as well: ny Bride canceled venue. I'm definitely personally unclear on who determines whether the space falls under restaurant & bar guidelines or the indoor / outdoor gathering guidelines!

My venue is on a committee working with local governments on this. there are some venues trying to operate as restaurants and find a loophole and do 50% capacity but the gathering size is 50 for any event in ny unless cuomo increases

My understanding is that it's either 50 people or 50% capacity, whichever is less in Phase 4 areas. So if the venue's capacity is 60, then you could only do 30 people because that's less than 50. But this does not include servers, staff, etc. - just guests.

We actually just spoke to the wedding coordinator where we are blocking hotel rooms because they were setting up for a wedding and I was curious to know and she said there said right now they are going by New York states rule of only 50 people😣

I'm getting married in Rochester on 9/19/20. We've heard from our venue that we need to plan on 50 people (including vendors). After slowly paring down our guest list many times, my fiancé and I landed on a small wedding of just our family, 2 maids of honor, and 2 best men. We are relieved because we heard last week from our coordinator that not even dancing is allowed. I know that this is the safest thing, but it certainly doesn't mean it's not disappointing!

My venue in Port Jefferson, NY is claiming that they can call themselves a restaurant and so can operate at 50% capacity. I wrote to the governor's office to get additional guidance on this. On July 20, 2020, I received an email back that advised that weddings are nonessential social gatherings and thus are limited to a maximum of 50 people or 50% capacity whichever is lower.
