Guest Book Alternative - Christmas theme!

Casey, on February 22, 2018 at 7:43 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 20

Hey everyone,

I had what I think is a really cool idea and I wanted to share it/get some opinions on how to make it a better idea!

I was looking for an alternative to a guest book and wanted something that would maybe go with my "theme" of Christmas as I'm getting married in December. I had an idea of purchasing some flat wooden ornaments that people could sign. I got the idea from looking at this link: https://www.etsy.com/listing/193067394/wooden-dove-for-wedding-wish-tree-or?ref=hp_rv

They are kinda plain but my sister is an art major and said we could stain them a little darker or paint them to get them to a color we like.

This would be really special to me because I will need ornaments for my Christmas tree, and I love how sentimental it would be to take the ornaments out every year and see our family and friend's name and well-wishes.

What are your thoughts? How could I make this idea better?

Thanks and happy planning!

Sounds like a great idea. Keep in mind that if you stain or paint them , it will require a different pen.

I would also do some price comparison shopping. 10 for $10 seems a bit pricey.

Thanks! Yeah I will for sure shop around, and I'll talk to my sister about what we will need to sign them if we decide to stain or paint them.

I think the basic idea is super-smart, and will make lovely mementos that you will see each year. Love it!

You could consider having one ornament per family of guests, instead of one per person?

Great idea! Maybe add a small border to dress them up a bit, some scalloping, but the stain might work well enough. I would order a few extra to experiment with it.

Honestly in LOVE with this idea! I'm super sentimental when it comes to decorating my tree too, and my favorite part is reminiscing on each ornament. With that being said, I agree with what some said before... there are tags at other places that are literally 1/4 of the price... especially if you're not set on the 'dove' shape exactly. I think Michaels craft store has little wooden tags in a few generic shapes (with holes in the top for ribbon or whatever you choose), that are only 25 cents each. You could probably find somewhere that sells in bulk. Maybe try orientaltrading.com ?

Also, just something that crossed my mind is that as you collect more ornaments throughout life, you may find yourself overwhelmed with the amount of these ornaments you have (depending on how many people attend your wedding). You could always shift to having 2 trees in the house in the future; one that is 'fancy' and has these on it, and another one for cutesy ornaments you've collected over the years, whether they be hand-me-downs from relatives or from future kids, gifts, or whatever. OR like GoodMOB mentions, have one household per ornament, so it doesn't take up all the space! If it were me, I would hate to not be able to put them all up on my tree because they don't fit with my kids 1st Christmas ornament. (for example!)

Super cute idea! Keep us updated with how it turns out!!! Smiley laugh

Thanks so much!! Ideally I’d have a variety of shapes for the ornaments (that Etsy shop had some other designs in the right hand corner BUT it is kinda pricy). I love the idea of having two trees eventually, my parents recently made that shift and they have a fancy but smaller decorative tree by the fireplace and our larger tree with all our family craft (some of which really need to be recycled as they’ve really deteriorated since I was in kindergarten 😂) and sentimental ornaments in another room.

Good idea! Maybe I can make a cute sign that explains it and people can do that during the cocktail hour or something.

Thanks for the kind words! I did do something similar, but instead of using them for a guestbook alternative, I had each ornament customized with each guest's name, hung them on a Christmas tree with table number assignments so they served double duty as their escort card and favor. For the guestbook alternative, I had a guest tree sketch where guests signed the branches. It came with the option to add fingerprints so we added ours, but for a Christmas look the guests could add theirs in different colors to look like ornaments or colored lights.

We did something similar for our November wedding. We bought our ornaments off Amazon and then just painted them ourselves. People really seemed to like it and we enjoyed reading them again as we put up our tree.

You could also get one big empty clear ball and have the guests sign small strips of paper (maybe wedding colored papers) and stuff them inside the ball.
