Growing Out a Pixie-Help!

Callie, on October 2, 2017 at 2:13 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 7

Hi everyone!

I'm new to the forum and was proposed to this August. My hair currently is a pretty short pixie cut, but I have 11 months to grow it out. I am hoping to be able to do braids and curls by August. Any ladies here have any advice or tips? How often should I get a trim? I've heard it's advisable every 4-5 months to cut away the dead ends. I never heat style it as it's thick and wavy, but am not looking forward to the awkwardness of growing it out. I've attached a picture of the style I'd like, vs. what my hair looks like now. I have no idea if it will grow to the length of the goal styles by August, and I have heard extensions can damage your hair and I'm not sure I can afford them anyways! Any advice or help on getting through the long and grueling process is appreciated! ^_^

I had the same length pixie as you when I got engaged and have been growing it out nonstop for two years to have it long for the wedding. It can be a good idea to meet with your doctor to see if you're deficient in anything, because the more your body has all the minerals and nutrients it needs, the faster and thicker your hair will grow. I also started taking a biotin supplement which I feel like helped a lot, but again, it's a good idea to check with your doctor just to make sure there's no reason you shouldn't take biotin or anything else.

In the interest of realistic expectations, I would say you can probably achieve the length of hair in the far right picture you posted by next August. The middle picture is about the length my hair is now after two years.

Good luck and I hope the awkward phase passes quickly!

I had a pixie which I loved, I am actually almost positive I will be cutting it that short after the wedding. I used to let mine go a 8-10 weeks and just styling and straightening my hair with product to keep it in place. I wouldn't get it cut unless it looked bad. But I loved my pixie cut, and am kind of sorry I grew it out. I think your second hair picture is a more realistic length of growing it out in 11 months. You look great with a pixie cut.

Average hair growth is 6 inches per year so #1 may not be possible without extensions or hair pieces. You don't have to get extensions. I not only have very short hair but my hair is very, very thin in the front (I am waaay older than you). I am generally okay with my hair but I was very concerned about bald spots in pictures. My hair stylist worked a MIRACLE by pinning (bobby pins) in lots of small pieces of hair. I had an up-do that looked like I had long hair. You just need to find the right stylist. I did have to grow my hair out as much as possible so there would be as much hair as possible to pin the fake hair to. It wasn't pleasant but the results were worth it.

    Good luck!

I take beauty vitamins from Olly and my hair grows almost an inch or more a month. Nails are insane too. I also drink a ton of water and eat a lot of fresh foods.

Biotin is a vitamin you can take for hair growth.

Don't dye or color your hair. Take care of it. Only wash it every few days.

Other than that there is no magic trick.

I agree with talking to a doctor about deficiencies! Also, be as gentle to your hair as possible. Try to avoid heat, deep condition it, etc. My hair has been growing a lot faster since I only use heat twice a week.

I don't want to discourage you, but I don't think you will get the look in your inspiration pics with just a year of growth. Granted, I don't know personally how your hair grows, but I'd say 6inches (per firstoneat56) sounds about right. That might put you at or around shoulder length.

I would try to contact an actual stylist to talk about extensions and timeline and things like that.

I have been growing my hair out for a little over a year and it has grown about 6". I do heat style which probably inhibits the growth a little.
