Groom's Sister & Bridesmaid Stress

My fiancé and I have been together 3.5 years and he popped the question over the weekend. Now it has turned into "should his sister be in the wedding?", she has already started bugging us asking if she's in it. She has been in two of her three best friends weddings, and both times I have seen a lot of issues, all related to her mental illness (she's bipolar). We were close the first year that I dated my fiancé, but now these past two years have been pretty rough. Between extremely mean things that she has said about me, to her selfish behavior, to the stress of having to worry about her illness, it has come down to me not wanting her in my wedding.

What are everyone's thoughts on sisters of the groom etiquette? I'm very worried about her stealing the spotlight, causing drama and just in general not getting along with my other bridesmaids. I planned on having a very small group of two bridesmaids and one MOH, so that she wouldn't be excluded from a huge group.

You do not have to ask. This is your day and you should never have to choose someone to be a bridesmaid just to please others.

I was kind of close to FH's sisters at the beginning of our relationship, but the relationships/friendships didn't really "stick." I considered having them in my wedding for the sake of having his sisters in the wedding, and because I do love them, but I will not be asking them to be my bridesmaids. Just my sister, my lifelong best friend, and another close friend.

You do not have to ask her to be in your bridal party. If things are rough then stick to your gut feeling and go with the NO. I agree with @Amanda B no need to explain either. One less stress for you to deal with.

I don't know why everyone says there are no duties involved with being in a bridal party. Of course there are! They are expected to be there for you and support you, if they are going to cause drama then they have no need being in it.

IMO there is no further financial obligation besides buying the dress, but they are expected to be at all wedding related events; IE shower, Bach, rehearsal. I wouldn't expect them to pay or even organize that stuff but I would want them there if they can be. I have 2 out of State BMs so they probably won't be at everything buy they both insist on helping plan stuff.

I know my opinion is not going to be popular here, buy it is consistent with normal expectations in my area. In fact my MOH was disappointed that I said I could handle all the planning myself. So I included her and we made the decisions on the STDs together and FH had final say on colors and font options.

Talk about this with your partner and decide together.

You dont have to ask her, but if you're uncomfortable you could site specific things she has said as to why you dont want her to bewith you. Then it would be concrete reasons of what she's done rather than a vague I don't want you here.

Keep the bridal party small and best friends only. If fiancé is okay with his sister being out of the party, go for it. Include her some other way like a reading or something. You'll probably regret it if you ask her and it goes south quick. You won't be able to kick her out but deal.

You have nearly a year before you're planning to get married - if she asks you about the BP, tell her that you've always heard you should wait until 6 months out to ask anyone, since their circumstances could change drastically over the next year. You can still invite her along for different wedding stuff if you want to, and maybe she'll cool down before you make a decision. If you want her there, ask her closer to your wedding. If you decide you'd rather not have her as a bridesmaid, your FH could have her on his side, or maybe you can give her a reading for the ceremony if you want to include her. But you don't have to.
