Apparently NO ONE in FH's family knew that you were supposed to wear white or and shade of white to a wedding, Especially if you are gonna be in photos. It started when we were discussing with FMIL what she should wear to our wedding. I said my colors were shades of purple, and she said she preferred to wear blue which i said was fine. Then i said our other color was cream, and she was like oh I can definitely wear cream. Then FH and I both said you arent supposed to wear white to a wedding, ESPECIALLY as one of the mothers. She said she had never heard of that. Which I find surprising. Then the next day, FH grandmother, said she had bought her outfit, and it was sparkly and cream. And of course she has already taken of the tags. So we had to have the conversation again with her that its really not appropriate. And she said she had never heard that...except FH told me aside that he is pretty sure she were white to her other grandchild's wedding and was told something then as well...

Eh old people. they do what they like.

is the family British? they tend to do the 'entire wedding party wears white' thing.

I had all my BMs and both mothers in champagne. I like the all light color theme. looks very elegant.

I dont know, to me when I say my colors are "purple and cream" i take it as wear complimentary colors, not wear the colors of the bridal party and flowers and decor. I wouldnt want any other mothers or dads looking like they are in the bridal party. I want them to be honored for who they are and their part in the wedding. Thats just me.

I guess, if I have a strong opinion on something and want something a certain way I will directly say I want this or I don't want this. From the description you gave above I probably would have went in the exact same direction as your grandmother in law. If all you told her was our colors are purple and cream and you can wear white to a wedding, I feel that she pretty much did what you directly asked she just wasn't able to read into what you were trying to say. I think you would have been better off just telling he what you wanted her to wear instead of waiting till she made a decision and telling her why you don't like it.

My MIL wore a light beige dress. You're not alone. If it bothers you, is there any chance you could get her to reconsider/return it.. ?

My stepmother wore cream. She is in all of the pictures. Nobody is confused about who the bride is. It was fine. No earthquakes erupted.

They didnt know my colors when she picked out her dress. This is just what she went out and did without any direction. Funny enough, even though I know we had told them this, FMIL thought our wedding was gonna be at night! How does she not know her only son's date and time of wedding? it's in six months. I know he has told her the date and time. We booked the church a week after getting engaged. I know we have told them details but they act like they are hearing them for the first time. I swear they dont really listen to the things we say. They hear what they want and then focus on that.

She's a grandma. She's probably my age......If she likes the dress, and she feels good about how it looks, just leave her alone. My god, no one is going to confuse her with you and the photos will be just fine. Don't make her feel bad about this, okay? Be glad there are grandparents coming.

That is very odd. All I can say is let it go...

You're going to be way more beautiful than a mother or a grandmother, anyway. It'll be obvious who the bride is.

Personally I'd find a scandaly inappropriately sexy dress a lot more offensive than someone else wearing white or cream.

Not sure how a grandmother goes through all of her life without hearing that?! It's it just common sense

I wouldn't have a problem with it, my FMIL will probably wear something in a beige or cream colour and I have no problem with it. She showed it to me online. I know it is usually not appropriate to wear white but I think cream is ok as long as your dress is not a cream colour. As others have said add some colour to her outfit with accessories and if you don't like the cream for photos next to your dress just keep another person between you and her. If it is really important to you get her a new outfit for Christmas if you prefer she wear a different colour.

I've always thought the whole idea of the families dressing to match the wedding party was weird. They're not in the wedding.

    I don't think it's a big deal for a grandmother to wear cream. I mean, she's grandma....

My mom is also wearing a champagne colored dress and she looks amazing in it. Who cares as long as it isn't white.

It sounds like Grandma didn't have any malicious intent when she bought the cream dress, so I would just let it go. I doubt any of your guests will even notice.

Neither of my grandmothers are still alive, and I was very close with both of them. I'd rather have them there in white than not there at all.

IMO - I think you are making more out of this than needs to be. It's your FH grandma...and it's beige. Let it go.

Why are people compairing a cream dress to a champagne and beige dress?....They are vastly different.

Mrs. M.....it would bother me. It always bothers me when people wear white or cream/ivory to a wedding. There are like a thousand other colors to choose from, let the bride 100% stand out for one day sheesh.

Also, sorry for all the crazy monkey's on your back, if it is a big deal to you, it's a big deal to you. Talk to her and see if she can wear the cream to say the rehersal dinner or something, depending on what you're wearing for that. I'm wearing red for mine, so I don't care what others wear.

Seeing as how your FH is pretty sure she's been told this before, sounds like she just wants to rile people up. So, smile and say, "I'm sure you'll look lovely in cream!" and let everyone whisper about her behind her back at the wedding. No one will, for one minute, think she's the bride. I'm sorry you're marrying into that kind of family, though.
