So I was talking about cakes with my mom, and she mentioned that traditionally the groom's cake is an animal shape. Has anyone ever heard of this before? This is actually kinda perfect because on our first date my FH said his dream wedding would have him riding in on a hippo, so I want to surprise...

I have never heard about it being animal shaped, but it sounds like a fun cake! Especially since its an inside joke between the two of you!

Haha that would be great! I'm surprising my FH at the rehearsal with a pokeball shaped one with I choose you written on it. It's so cheesy but so perfect!

FH's groom cake is going to be similar to this and it's going to have our wedding cake on the flatbed of it.

It doesn't have to be shaped like an animal, but grooms cakes are traditionally more "fun" and reflect the groom's personality and interests!

We did a groom's cake at the rehearsal dinner and it looked awesome! DH loved it!

I think the groom's cake needs to be customized to his interest. I would have to order a cake that looks like a weight plate.

I was originally planning on doing this because FH looooves Star Wars... however I think realized it would be like $400 and we already have a TON of desserts (cake, ice cream, gulab jamun (an indian dessert donut in syrup), and a cookie table, so I passed.

But I love the idea, if you're doing something, it should be to reflect his personality. I've never heard of the animal thing, but if that works for him then go for it!

OP that sounds like a fun and meaningful surprise for your FH! I'm going to surprise mine with one at the rehearsal dinner. I'm going to have the baker somehow incorporate his F/18 jet, his squadron logo and the LA Dodgers lol. Not sure how it'll all tie together but it should be really fun!
