Groom's cake

Jamie, on April 21, 2017 at 2:51 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 30

So I was talking about cakes with my mom, and she mentioned that traditionally the groom's cake is an animal shape. Has anyone ever heard of this before? This is actually kinda perfect because on our first date my FH said his dream wedding would have him riding in on a hippo, so I want to surprise him with a hippo shaped cake. Is that lame?

I think it's a great inside joke! Personally, I thought a grooms cake was to show off the grooms personality, and is eithet served at the rehearsal dinner or the wedding.

Definitely a cute touch of your personalities. As for a traditional grooms cake in an animal shape, I've never heard of it.

I haven't heard that but that's a cool idea. We did a pirate themed grooms cake because we were married on the beach in the oldest city in the US. there are pirate ship cruises and we have our groomsmen pirate hats and treasure chests. I'd say go for the animal thing cause it fits for you guys. I don't think it has to be any specific thing. Because I thought it was cool here is ours.

Can someone explain what a groom's cake is? Sorry, I'm just not sure what it is as this is my first planning of a wedding and all

A grooms cake is a smaller cake made in addition to your wedding cake to represent the groom. They're usually fun and non-traditional unlike the wedding cake

Ohhh I see. Thank you! I had no idea about it... but now I think I want to do that... my fiancee is part native American and he loves wolves so maybe something like that would be a cool idea for his?

I've never heard of it being shaped like an animal before but that sounds cute! We were either thinking of doing an anchor (FH is in the navy) or a big ND for Notre Dame since he'll have a bachelors and JD from there.

Grooms cakes are just something to reflect the groom's personality. Ours is going to be a hiking themed cake! No animals here!

OP your hippo idea is cute though! Just be careful, because any boldly colored icing (gray, brown, blue, green, etc) can and will stain your teeth and lips!

For those who don't know, grooms cakes are usually cake for the rehearsal dinner, though I've seen them at the actual wedding reception before too.

It is not a tradition that the groom's cake has to be an animal.

The tradition is that it's a 'gift' from the bride that reflects something in Groom's personality/interests because the rest of the wedding decorations and everything is generally all about the bride. I've seen hotrods and guitars as groom's cakes.

BUT the inside joke about the hippo is adorable. I think you could even go a little further and get a saddle on the hippo to make the joke clear?

I've never heard or seen the grooms cake being shaped like an animal but that doesnt mean you can't do it. I think that sounds like a great idea though, I bet your FH will get a kick out of it! You should have the baker add a little groom on top of the hippo, too! Lol
