Groom in tailcoat?

Madelaine, on September 22, 2016 at 7:34 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 7

My FH and I are both old-fashioned and traditional. We do historical recreation dancing and go to the Dickens Fair for fun. I almost had a Victorian-themed wedding, but I didn't want to put the rest of the wedding party through the stress of dressing for the period.

That said, we're retaining period elements without making the wedding themed. Would it be completely bizarre for FH to wear a modern tailcoat? Conductors and soloists with orchestra still wear them! (We're both classical musicians.) Then again, the wedding is 11 AM on a Saturday.

What do men normally wear? What makes a tuxedo different from a suit aside from the stripe down the side of the pants? Do any non-musicians wear tailcoats?

Tails implies formal tuxedo, formal event, etc.

If your wedding is at 11am on a Saturday, then you need to look for a morning coat, not tails. With a vest and an ascot. That's what my husband wore (yup, we're Dickens people, too).

DF's #1 request/demand is that he gets to wear a cutaway tailcoat with a burgundy/wine colored cummerbund and bow tie. I think it's ridiculously formal for the size and time of our wedding, but you know what? It's his wedding too, and if it makes him happy, then we'll do it. Lol.

So we will be doing it at our small 20-30 guest, lunchtime wedding, lol.

ETA: I also have a feeling he might not like it once he tries it on at the shop when we start tux shopping, so I'm hoping he will sway towards something a little less extreme, but I'm prepared for him to stick by it, too.

Thank you! I've never taken the time to learn about men's attire. Are morning coats normally sold in this century?
