Green Card.... name change?

Gemma, on August 5, 2010 at 3:00 PM Posted in Planning 0 7

Another posted inspired this one... I know you have to change your social and licence... passport and such eventually. What about your green card? I was born in England and just haven't had the time nor money to get my citizenship. Anyone else not a citizen?

Well, to be precise, you have to change your license and passport only if you change your name on getting married, not if you just get married without a name change. However, if you are changing your name, you will need a new green card. Here are the procedures for getting it.

I'm a citizen, but my wife is not.

I am not changing my name for this very reason, I don't want to have to deal with all the legal changes for immigration. FS is OK with that too. In fact, he hadn't expected me to take his name anyway, which surprised me.

I wasn't going to change my name either, because the last time I messed with INS it was a nightmare (back in the 80's). However, I got in a little bit of trouble coming back to the states in June as my Green Card is soooo old, it's falling apart and the Immigration guy said I need to get a new one (I'm grandfathered in as I got it in 1984, so it never expires).

However, since I now have to change it anyway, Rick whined and wanted me to hyphenate. Up to now all I have changed is my DL. I'm not messing with my Green Card and Passport until I get back from England at Xmas. I know how they are and they will take friggin EONS to get it done.

Hmmmm.... so can I get married and have my marriage certificate say my married name, and then change all my other documents at a later date?

Gemma - yes you have to have a copy of your marriage certificate to send in the I-90 form to change your name. My marriage certificate shows my maiden name and Rick's name. But it's the proof they need to change your name to your husbands. I'm hyphenating, so I'll have a copy of my Drivers License to show my new hyphenated name.

Between updating your British passport and changing your green card, you're looking at around $600. I'm waiting to do mine because the bastards take forever..lol.
