Greek Ceremony Outside of the Church?

Danielle, on January 10, 2020 at 7:41 PM Posted in Wedding Ceremony 0 4
My fiancé is Greek Orthodox and we’re trying to find a priest that will perform the ceremony at our reception venue. We didn’t think that would be an issue, however, turns out that most Greek Orthodox priests won’t allow this. Has anyone ever had a Greek wedding outside of a church? Any insight would be helpful!

A priest isn’t allowed to perform the marriage ceremony outside of the church. Can I ask why you don’t want to marry in the church?

I don’t think that’s possible. It’s like catholic weddings where it can’t happen outside of the church. I’m sorry.

My mother has MS and her lack of mobility, plus extreme anxiety, has gotten so bad that she barely leaves the house. The wedding day is going to be a struggle for her so ideally we’d like everything to be in one location.

Hey there, Danielle. When you spoke to the priest, did you explain the circumstance with your mother’s illness? If they knew, perhaps they may be willing to make an exception.
