My colors are also black & gold & burgundy. So I'm having a hard time trying to decide on what the bridesmaid dresses should be, because everyone body type is so different. & I don't want a tacky wedding.

I had a 1920's early afternoon themed wedding based more on Downton Abbey than art deco. I didn't plan on having dancing and had an IPod of 1920-30s music playing through the reception. We had an open area and people actually did do some dancing to the music. It was fun. But, if your serious about people getting up to dance at an evening wedding you probably want to stick to currant music.

Okay, that's what I was thinking, Thank You. Do you have any advice for me on what kinds of foods to have for the wedding that fit the theme?

I love it....flapper style dresses....pearls...headpiece...1920s dance music...that's stuff I would do and of course alcohol considering great gatsby/1920s is about prohibition. I hope you've read the book or seen the movie it could help

I think there's a risk in overdoing any theme. It's a wedding, not a prom. That said, I think an art deco themed wedding sounds lovely if you don't overdo it. Rather than serving thematic foods (no idea what that would even be, and I'm not sure your guests would recognize them either), I'd maybe just stick to a couple of signature 1920's cocktails to tie in the theme. Similarly, maybe play one or two songs, but otherwise stay current. I wouldn't worry about the bridesmaids dresses fitting the theme.

Also, I'd really consider describing it more as art deco than Gatsby. The Great Gatsby is more of a sad critique of the kind of party it sounds like you want than an endorsement of it.

Chinese and Italian foods were very popular during that time. Beef, chicken, duck, ham. Finger foods were popular wedding choices as well with chicken and tuna salads. Mashed potatoes and different vegetable dishes. I think your safe with whatever you choose.

We did stations....a Polish station, Italian station, Irish station and Chicken/waffle station because of our family backgrounds. People thought it a blast and the food was great.

Have you read the Great Gatsby? I think a 1920's theme would be more appropriate for a wedding.

Literally the most depressing book I can think of to set a wedding theme to.

But the art deco theme I can get behind Smiley smile

ETA: No, Wuthering Heights would be the worst. Gatsby takes #2.

I agree with MNBride and AMW. Great Gatsby isn't the way to start off a marriage, unless you're marrying your FH for his money, while secretly being in love with someone you decided was too poor for you. I love the book, but it's completely tragic and just SO sad. Just call it a 1920s/art deco theme.

@AMW: Oh, man, now I am laughing at my desk about a Wuthering Heights themed wedding.

I really really love Art Deco, but everyone has to stop using "The Great Gatsby" to describe that vibe.

I actually stayed away from modern art deco decorations. What you see in The Great Gatsby are excessive gilded parties. That’s not what you would have seen at a wedding in that time. I wanted more what it would have looked like if I got married in that time period. I had the girls dress in 1920's day wear. My veil and shoes were 1920's, the type of bouquet carried in that time. My centerpieces were simple vases with flowers and votives.

I'm actually doing a sort of Art Deco/ old Hollywood...I chose not to do great gatsby because I wanted my wedding to still be sort of formal. My colors are Ivory, black, gold with a pop of red

Same with me.............Adultery and deceit are not the characteristics I would emphasize for a wedding.

Depends if you want to actually do a full course meal, just small appetizers, or dessert bar. Pinterest has helped me a lot with my wedding ideas (Christmas theme). But the Great Gatsby/1920s style ideas will be easy to find

Call it 20's/art deco instead of Great Gatsby. That's one of the worst books possible to theme a wedding on. No, you don't have to have the food and music match the theme necessarily; most themes are best when the touches are subtle. Black, gold and burgundy will look great together!
