Gray or Black?

Lindsay, on October 7, 2012 at 8:17 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 22

I have always imagined the groomsmen wearing black suits and have never been a fan of gray or khaki groomsmen attire. However, our colors are light pink, gray, and pops of brighter pink. I am not sure what shade the girl's dresses will be yet but they will definitely be pink. The flowers are all pink as well (all one shade). Originally we were going to do black suits with gray vest and tie and a pink bout (instead of black suit with pink vest and tie). Now I am wondering if this will look out of place because black will not be seen anywhere else at our wedding. The gray is kind of starting to grow on me. I do not want anything about my wedding to be vintage since that is not us at all so if we choose gray I need it to look modern. What do you guys think? Black or gray suits?

My wedding is going to be very formal, elegant, and romantic but at the same time it is going to have aspects that reflect my bubbly personality.

We are doing gray, mostly because FH and I have been together since High School and went to 3 proms together and he wore a black tux to all three proms. I wanted something different, that didn't feel like another prom. Plus we are getting married in the spring and our colors are purple and teal and I really like how gray went with those colors!

Since people aren't decorations, I don't think that them being in black suits will look out of place with everything else. (I don't say that to be snooty since that is a phrase that is told often to bridezilla's who post about bridal party members looking a certain way, rather just as fact)

I do think that grey suits (which I personally love) will definitely bring out your color scheme better in bridal party photos and during your ceremony, however black will not look bad.

Does your FH have any preference on the suits? My original color plan (before I redesigned) had the guys in tan suits. However my DH expressed preferring to wear a dark color instead. Then I switched him to navy. I personally didn't like the formality of black for our spring, outdoors wedding.

Is gray considered more casual rather than formal?

I had a LOT of bridal parties do grey or khaki suits and I really loved them. Black is perceived to be more formal, but it goes with everything. Grey doesn't automatically look vintage; it depends on the cut of the suit.

Mine will be khaki. We're getting married next Labor Day weekend and having a casual, "Fun & Games" affair. Black is way too stuffy and I love the look of Horizon Blue (our color) set against khaki.

Consider the lighting during the reception too. If the room or venue is well lit, Black will complement just fine, but don't be afraid to take the dare and explore other Groomsmen colors. After all, what will you wear at your 25th celebration.

I think black is more classic/traditional & I really don't think your guests will be saying "Omg wtf were Bride & Groom thinking?! Groom soooo clashes with EVERYTHING ew," I'm just saying.. haha. What does your FH think or feel most comfortable in?

Personally, with the colors you're describing I think gray would work really well... but black does tend to be more formal and traditional. I also don't think the black will clash with anything if "elegant" is the feel you're going for.

I really just think it depends on the look you're going for. Grey and pinks will look softer, whereas black with pink is higher contrast. I think both combos would look great, it really just depends on what you want. Also keep in mind your date and weather in your area - for example if you're having an outdoor wedding in Texas in June, you probably don't want to dress the guys in black b/c they might pass out. Smiley smile As far as formal v. casual, I do think black can look more formal but I also think the shape of the tie makes a big difference. IMO, black tuxes look like suits unless they have a bow tie. So I don't really think that matters.

H and our guys wore this grey tux from MW, H really liked the cut and I liked how everyone's attire was really soft and the pop of color came from the yellow flowers.

Kris I like those suits! And your wedding was formal so they would work for mine too.

I LOVE grey suits, and think they look really dashing. We won't be doing them because one of my colors is black though. Otherwise I'd totally go with it!

I like the gray tux but for our wedding we are doing black. Our wedding is in November though and I personally thought that the gray was too summery. Our colorsnare orange and graythough ans our BMs dresses are dark gray so I wanted a little contrast betweek the girls and the guys as well.

Can someone provide me with an example of what is considered a "modern" cut suit and what is considered "vintage"? We are not sure if our reception is going to be at my church or our venue yet but our venue is located on the beach and our reception is from 6pm-11pm so the ceremony will probably be around 4pm.

We had the guys all in black suits and my now DH in a dark grey- I didn't think he looked vintage- because that was not what we were going for at all anyways. I think they all looked pretty handsome- and we had no black at all in our wedding however the girls had grey/silver dresses and I thought the two different greys beside eachother would look odd if they were almost but not the same color grey- annd DH wanted to stand out a bit in his suit.
