Grass Dance Floor?

Kelsie, on January 30, 2014 at 12:42 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 21

We are having a backyard wedding in a small town in Iowa. I really like the idea of dancing under the stars and it is a super casual wedding. I don't see that a dance floor would be necessary, because I have the idea of sectioning of the dance area with poles and christmas lights.

Keep in mind this is a midwestern, casual wedding.

What do you guys think?

Tell guests not to wear heels if you don't have a dance floor

Hmm...i say if you can get the grass short enough or packed down enough it will be fine. I like the idea of sectioning it off the way you described. That way guest will know what its for. Maybe make a cute sign with a cute saying about dancing under the stars.

What if it rains? It'll be a muddy mess. We've had many backyard BBQ's and found out that even just standing around a table for drinking games... it's messy, even if it's under a tent because of the dew and everything.

I love the idea of dancing under the stars, but your dress is going to get dirty and guests with heels will have a hard time dancing at all. I would suggest a dance floor, I think!

Rental companies and tent rental companies have dance floors you can rent.

I agree with the other comments about mud, your dress getting dirty, the ground being too soft for those in heels, etc.

Also, keep in mind people have allergies. I break out in hideous hives and itch like crazy when my skin comes in conact with grass. Yes, even my ankles.

Snappylove, I love the idea of making a cute sign for the dancefloor! And thanks for the compliment.

I guess it makes sense with allergies and muddy mess.. Im not too worried about my dress getting grass stains or mud on the bottom because we'll be outside the whole day.

I think investing in a dance floor is worth it. You could run into a multitude of problems. (1) Heels tearing up the grass or preventing people from dancing because they are in heels (2) staining your dress (3) possibility of rain making it mushy and muddy. I would consider a dance floor, you can still dance under the stars : )

Im doing the same. sectioning off a space. Make sure you are wearing flats and let everyone know that heels are a bad idea. also have a back up place in case it is raining.

I love your vision on this. I like the idea of a sectioned off or open area between tables with a little pinterest worthy sign!!! I have also seen outdoor wedding that have a cute bucket of flip flops in wedding colors, with a sign for guest to put on their dancing shoes! That would help with the woman in heels problem!

If renting a dance floor is too expensive, you could at least pick up some large pieces of plywood at Home Depot, screw/nail them together---instant dance floor.

I would have something hard on the ground to dance on. I just imagine the poor grass getting tore up with nothing to cover it. But I am hoping my guests tear up the dance floor all night.

Decent plywood is actually expensive. Buy the cheaper, unfinished plywood and anyone going barefoot will get splinters.

They're right about the grass becoming a mess - every outdoor wedding I work, I always tell them to lay down something (like hay or a mat) in high traffic spaces like tent entrances. Ladies wearing heels will sink, too.

As people dance, they will turn your dance floor into mud much quicker than you'd think possible. Heaven help you if it's rained anytime in the last few days.

We did a wedding last summer and it rained really bad the 2 days before the wedding. It was a swamp. The family had put down plywood and it was sinking as you walked on it. I wasn't there the day of the event, but was there the day before and the day after. It was a total mess. We had installed tents to cover where guests would eat dinner, but even that area was a total muddy mess.

I totally understand your desire to dance under the stars, but please have a back-up plan. I'm not familiar with typical Iowa weather...maybe you guys don't get as much rain as some other areas. Sorry for being debbie downer on this one....

Sounds good to me you'll do something like the picture for people who wear heels!

What about bugs? i hate walking in grass even with flip-flops on. I always feel like there is something crawling on my feet.

I am actually planning on doing the same thing. For those who say the heels will get stuck, honestly if you know the wedding is going to be outside all day why wear heels. To me thats just asking for your own problems. I would try and put a little note though on the invite so guests know what to fully expect of the day.

I am getting married in MN in Sept. I looked up average weather in the area to know what to kinda expect. EX August is the rainest months around here.
