Grandparents declining fast... won’t make it to wedding

Rebecca, on October 7, 2019 at 10:49 PM Posted in Wedding Ceremony 0 9
My grandparents mean the world to me and all I’ve ever wanted was for them to attend my wedding. Over the last few months their health has rapidly declined. Grandpa can’t stand without a mechanical lift and he also needs help eating. Grandma broke her hip, and although she’s recovered, her health has declined since making her more confused.
Our wedding is an hour and a half away. I’m starting to realize it is not fair for them to travel all that way. They keep insisting that they will be. It breaks my heart.

Has anyone been in this predicament?
I am considering having a small ceremony for them in town just a few days before the wedding. Are there any cons to this?

I am so sorry to hear about that! I think a small ceremony for them is a great idea, and you could livestream the actual ceremony for them if you can.

I think doing something special with just them would be an awesome idea, especially if your grandmother is getting confused easier. My FHs grandma has really bad dementia so I get the struggles as to have them come or not.

We're having an international destination wedding so sadly only 1 grandparent will be in attendance. We are going to display the wedding photos of our 4 sets of grandparents on our guestbook table. I think it would be really sweet to have something at home with them or at least try on your dress for them.

I think it's a very sweet idea, but I would actually talk to them about it. They may be really looking forward to making it to your actual wedding, and I would make sure it wouldn't hurt them to not make it. Just ask them. It's sweet, but it's also not your actual wedding.

I’m in a similar situation. My grandfather was recently diagnosed with a terminal brain infection and he’s been pretty sick since and my wedding is a year away. I am having pictures with him in a white dress (not my wedding dress) after my engagement pics since my hair and makeup will already be done.

I'm in a similar situation where my Papau and Grannie Tee won't be able to make it to my wedding because of his health. My Papau has severe Alzheimer's so he or my Grannie Tee (who is his main caretaker) won't be able to be there. I'm trying to figure out something special to do with them around my wedding. We're potentially going to have a live stream of the wedding so they can watch it.... but I'm not sure if we'll do that or not. I love the pictures idea with them in a white dress!

Our plan originally was to fly to Arizona a few weeks/month before our wedding and elope with my grandfather. He couldn't travel and had a difficult time walking. Then have our wedding in Colorado after. Unfortunately my grandfather passed away 2 days before my husband proposed to me, so we weren't able to do so.
