Got my teeth whitened today...OUCH

Chantelle, on September 14, 2012 at 2:58 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 18

I got my teeth whitened today for the first time ever...Oh My!! I hurts really bad. My teeth are so sensitive right now. I can't wait for it to go away. They look good though, beauty is pain I guess. I don't think I will ever be doing that again. I have had a couple root canals and they are nothing compared to this!! The hygenist said it should only hurt for today. Crossing my fingers Smiley smile

Sorry, I don't mean to make anyone scared lol...It is just super super sensitive. I got the Venus treatment. She said most people, when they get their teeth whitened, it causes sensitivity. I don't know if it happens to everyone, but she said most people. I took ibuprofen and tylenol and it isn't as bad, but it still hurts. The results are good tho, so it might be worth it.

@LovelyBride...she didnt give me the trays cause it was gonna cost extra. But I sat in the chair and she put the stuff on my teeth and had to wash it off every 10 mins, there were 4 times that she had put the stuff on my teeth. It took about an hour. Next time I think I am just going to use the Crest 3D White strips lol, they probably don't work as well tho. Sorry you had to get a root canal today, no fun!!

I have heard that the reason it is painful is because of sensitivity. It actually takes off enamel from your teeth, which results in the sensitivity =[

I had my teeth whitened several years ago. My teeth were extremely sensitive for 1-2 days. I remember it was during the winter months, and when I opened my mouth the wind hit my teeth and caused me to squirm in pain! After that, the sensitivity went away and the results were great! It will definitely get better and be worth the pain in the end.

I had it done and omg! Never again. I slept the whole day after I got it done because it was too painful to even stay awake. Felt like a thousand needles stabbing me in my nerves. Reminded me of that horrible sharp stab you feel during a root canal!!!!!

I have never had whitening done, but am a Dental Assistant. Whitening causes sensitivity because of the strength of "bleach" used. The white strips and other whitening methods bought in the store really do work but they are much lower strengths than used in office, so they take longer to reach your goal. The sensitivity will go away.

I found this article which explains it pretty well.

I have never had mine professionally whitened, but have used the Crest whitestrips and the same thing happened to me... didn't want to breath because the air was unbearable. I talked to my dentist about it and he said that pro whitening will likely do the same thing. I may brave it out and whiten for my wedding anyways though.

I had to bear through the pain all throughout my work day and when I went home I went right to sleep..the pain is gone today thank goodness! I have super sensitive teeth as it is, but that was horrible...I know I would never do it again, I am happy with the results though.

I have used the strips many times over the years and they do work. I actually just started the Crest 3D Vivid 10 day pack and in 3 days so far, I have noticed a visible huge change in my color! I am concerned with the strength of the dentist chemicals as I dont want to damage my enamel for that. The 3D strips are enamel safe so it makes me feel a little better. My sister and dad tried the light version where they put the UV light in your mouth or something and it wasn't bad. They definitely didnt have pain so that could be an option for some people. For now I think I will stick to the strips!

I have heard that it can cause pain!! I was told that if anything cold hurts your eat then you have pretty sensitive teeth, then you will be likely to have a reaction.

Glad it went away and you are loving your results!!! Smiley smile

OMG, I would catch up on some Ibprofen or Advil and put a warm compress on your mouth. I hope you start to feel better later tonight or even tomorrow.
