Going Away Outfits, is anyone still doing this tradition?

BeckiO, on January 8, 2009 at 5:03 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 12

I was thinking of from the same dress maker (Raylia Design) that I plan to buy my Wedding Dress from for my Hubby's and My Vow Renewal I was thinking of under the bridesmaid section getting one of the strapless pant suits they have as a going away outfit. Is this tradition still going on or have brides started doing away with it? I am planning on possibly bringing with my origional wedding dress which was something I bought at a maternity store due to being 7 months pregnant at the time and didn't want to try squeezing into anything tight and wearing that after all of the formal pictures are taken since we don't have a single picture from our Wedding Day. I know my friend's brother and SIL did it for theirs, but I know my sister left still wearing her Wedding Gown and didn't change at all. Please let me know if I'm the only one or not who is thinking of a going away outfit?

Since most of the the things we're including for our Wedding is Do it yourself and the only areas we're not going to skimp on at all are Food/Venue and Photographer (unless we go through one of the schools and have a Photography Student take our photographs). Right now we don't have a set budget and we're little by little putting everything together since we have the time. I didn't stay til the end of my cousin's Wedding, but since her reception was at the same hotel where she and her hubby stayed the night of their wedding, I don't think she had one. I wasn't sure if this was becoming less common. Do couples who even do after parties incorporate this, so they can go out after their Reception with their guests more comfortable. My origional dress is very comfortable, however might get ruined during a crawfish boil, which is why I'm bringing it with and still have something to change into after that's comfy. What types of outfits do brides use for going away outfits? Any ideas please.

Thank you for your reply Emily. It's quite helpful. You are right by having a vow renewal I will get to do the things that I didn't get to the first time around, hence why I want to get the Wedding Dress and Going Away Outfit(even if my hubby goes with my suggestion for him wearing khakis and a polo shirt) even though my husband and groomsmen won't be wearing tuxedos (due to my hubby's comfort). I wasn't sure if brides were still going with this tradition. I know our event isn't going to be as traditional as most with a lot of old traditions, but we're also creating new traditions of our own. The Going Away Outfit is one tradition I have always loved and wasn't sure if anyone was still doing this.

I guess I am young, but I have never heard of going away outfits. Normally you just leave in your dress/ tux back to the hotel.

The tradition of the going away outfits where before the bride and groom leave they change out of their dress and tux and leave in more comfortable clothes, especially if they are heading straight for the airport that night or the next morning following the Wedding. My aunt did this years ago when she got remarried and I love the tradition. It also lets you get out of all of those uncomfortable undergarments that us women tend to wear to help us have a nice figure under our dresses that can be heavy and extremely uncomfortable. A lot of brides can't wait to get out of their dresses especially if the dress itself is heavy from the beading or extra hoop skirts to make it more poofy and the tight strapless bras under. I'm doing away with a train on my dress and not wearing a veil (which are also things brides can't wait to take off or have busseled up).

Thank you so much for the article. It's fabulous. I'll have to print it out and keep it in my Bridal Consulting Course Binder for future clients who ask me about that. Even if my hubby and I stay the next day after our Wedding to send our guests off with a farewell brunch, and head off on our Honeymoon from there, the Going Away Outfit is still a great tradition that isn't as popular as it used to be.

I am sticking to tradition on the going away outfit. We are going on a cruise to the Bahamas and I am wearing a white fancy tank with a white fancy skirt and white sandals for my going away outfit.

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one on here. Thank you. I'm not sure yet when my hubby and I are going on our Honeymoon yet (and it's been almost 2 years since we got married), but we might plan something for after the Vow Renewal Craziness is over and escape for a few days alone, so the Going Away Outfit is defanitely an idea.I love your idea for your Going Away outfit.

Oh am I mad now. For the 2nd time the Wedding Gown I love is discontinued and can't find it anywhere (sadly I don't have the dress number for the Style) and so is the Going Away Outfit. I guess I'm back to square one all over again.

I love the Going Away Outfit tradition. I look at my Mother and Father's wedding photos with my Mother in her Going Away dress, standing on the church steps and tossing her bouquet to her bridesmaids and it just stands out in my memory.

    Best wishes to you!

Thank you for the well wishes. Thank you for bring back your fond memory of your parents wedding. Sadly I don't think my mom did that for her's and my dad's wedding, but I think they ruined all of their wedding pictures since they're divorced now. I just remember my Aunt having a classy going away outfit for her 2nd Wedding when I was younger in the '90s. Since I don't have a single picture from my actual wedding day, it would even be nice for a Vow Renewal with a Ceremony which is more personal to us and looking back on pictures and having the Going Away Outfit. I think I seemed a little dissappointed not seeing my sister do this for her wedding since she loved the tradition and tried making her wedding as traditional as possible. My hubby's and my vow renewal isn't going to be completely traditional, but that just is one of the more priceless traditions in weddings that guests remember.

I'm in luck, someone else posted a discussion on an online website where I found my Dream Wedding Gown and Going Away outfit. Here's the link for the Going Away Outfit that I love:
