Godparents - what to do?

Kaeli, on May 1, 2019 at 11:15 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 3

My fiance & his family are Filipino,,.as such we've agreed to his mom to have ninongs and ninangs (godparents) at our ceremony. My problem is his family invited a lot of people (close family aunts/uncles) and all are attending, while most of my family isn't able to attend our wedding for financial/travel reasons. Outside of my parents, only my 2 grandmas and one aunt will attend.

I guess in Filipino culture it's traditional that each the bride and groom choose their side's godparents. My problem is I don't even have two people from my side to make even a single pair of godparents.

Should we just not include godparents/sponsors at all? Any advice appreciated!

    Hi Kaeli!

Congratulations on your engagement and welcome to the WeddingWire community Smiley smile

Planning a wedding with blended traditions can have some challenges, but it's really beautiful and fun!

As your FS family are Filipino, have you spoken with them and asked their advice as to what you should do? As they’re familiar with the tradition, they may be able to guide you as to how situations like this are usually handled.

Can your aunt and one of your grandparents act as your godparents, or is this not what you want? If you already have a ceremony officiant picked out they may also be able to guide you through this.

Could your groom's godparents take the role for both bride & groom?

I second this. That would be a good alternative.
