GOBO and uplighting

DonnaBelle, on December 13, 2012 at 10:54 AM Posted in Planning 0 7

I want a gobo light for the dance floor at the wedding reception. My venue says they can provide this for $300. They will also do the uplighting (6 lights) for $160. I don't know if that's a good deal or not. Do you think I should just go with this or get some outside lighting vendors to give me an estimate?

Thanks for your help ladies!

Based on what I'm paying the uplighting is a good deal! I personally, decided the GOBO light wasn't worth the money.... Especially after asking a bridesmaid what she thought of the monogram light at a recent friend's wedding and she said "they had a monogram light?" and also, it messes up pictures if it's projected on the dancefloor.

I think they are over charging to do uplighting especially with only 6 lights. You can go to DIYuplighting for $19 per unit and most places I've quoted charge $18-20 Each. Seems like your venue is charging almost $26/light.

I'm not familiar with the Gobos though. That may be a good deal but I'm not sure.

And that part depends on the size of your venue. 6 lights may or may not be enough. Also, this is one of those things that I thought is worth paying a little more for to not have to set up/tear down/return/buy yourself. My DJ is doing it with his package.

I would check on an outside vendor just in case, because most reception venues charge extra to use additional services at a higher cost.

Thanks for your input, ladies. I think I will check out a few outside vendors to see what they quote me.

Just some food for thought on this topic. Lighting is like anything else...you have low grade and high grade lighting, and you also have actual lighting designers and companies who offer lighting as an "a la carte item" and limited in their capabilities.

There is a lot more than what meets the eye with lighting, and I would highly recommend that you check out some of the photos from past events and see how it looks.

Just remember that lighting is part of your event's design and when done right it can be beautiful.
