Gifts for the Unsentimental Mother

mc4dj13, on August 10, 2013 at 6:44 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 7

I really need help on this one, ladies. I have scoured the internets trying to find a gift for my mother to thank her for the wedding. My daddy was easy to shop for because I know what kind of gift he would appreciate. The traditional MOB/MOG gift is jewelry, nice picture frame, or a hankie. My mother won't give two shits about any of that stuff, but she will be upset when she sees the gift I give to my fiance's mother (we are giving gifts at the rehearsal dinner). She won't say anything at the time but will corner me afterwards asking why she didn't get the same thing! *Face palm* She's a bit of a hypocrite. My fiance's mother treasures sentimental gifts a lot more than my mother so I made her a personalized handkerchief. I was hoping to find her a more practical gift that she can use daily, but that also ties into the wedding. Any ideas? I am afraid my gift will get stuffed into a drawer like all the others I have given her over the years before I learned my lesson.

Does she drink coffee? You can make her a "wedding" mug. Host a lot of dinner parties? A platter somehow tied in to the wedding?

What would you buy her for her birthday?

Reenski- For birthdays and Mother's Day I get her a nice card and a gift card so she can go buy whatever she wants. She doesn't travel, host parties, or work. She is a tough one to shop for.

Ahh I'm having the same problem! My mom does not like that sentimental stuff at all.

Can you do an "experience" gift where you guys go shopping for her MOB dress and you pay for it? Or a mother/daughter spa day right before the wedding?

She does sounds tough -- she sounds like me. Smiley sad

Get her a mob hankie and let her shove it in the drawer.

^ This would be my last resort suggestion. :/ At least it saves you the argument of different things for her vs MIL.

I think the spa day will have to be the winner. My first choice is to give her something to keep, though. I am giving my dad a father/daughter dance photo frame so on days she feels sentimental she can look at that I guess!
