Gifts for parents (all divorced) not paying

Kayla, on April 25, 2019 at 10:32 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 20
I'm wondering if anyone has any advice on giving gifts to parents and their significant others. Both my FH's parents and my parents are divorced and they all are remarried or at least dating someone long term. My mom is so far the only one who has contributed anything financially. FH's mom has offered to help make decorations and stuff but she lives 6 hrs away so it's hard to have her do all of that. Anyway, I'm struggling to figure out what to get everyone and if we're supposed to get gifts for all the step parents/significant others also. I also suck balls at buying gifts for people as it is so any suggestions are greatly appreciated!

We’re doing group presents by couple instead of one per person, there are three sets of parents so that would make it way too much money. We are writing a thank you note to each set and will be doing photo books for each set

I really like the idea of couples gifts! Way cheaper that way too haha! I've seen some other discussions mentioning the album's or letting them pick their favorite picture and having it framed for them. So I think I'm definitely going to do the pictures somehow.

Daughter and SIL gave us lovely, small token gifts, but they each wrote us the sweetest, most thoughtful thank you notes, and we will treasure those forever. Smiley heart

Thank you for advice from the parents side! It's good to know that it doesn't have to be super elaborate.

You don't necessarily have to do gifts. As someone explained above, a heartfelt thank you note is more than enough.

That's very true. I just feel like I need to give them something, even if it's little you know.

In addition to the heartfelt cards, daughter and SIL gave each of the moms an embroidered handkerchief (mine was customized with something I've said to daughter throughout her life, but I think MOG's was a more "standard" message) and both dad's got custom cuff links (again, FOBs were super specific to something he & daughter both love and FOGs were a bit more generically related to a hobby of his). I don't know for sure, but I'd guess they spent about $25 or less on each gift. But, like I said, the cards meant the most to us. Good luck!

My fiance's parents are helping with the wedding financially at all. We got his mom a handkerchief that is personalized, bought her dress, bought her a picture frame, and wrote her a letter. For his dad (he did pay for the rehearsal dinner), we wrote him a letter, got him a picture frame, and bought his tie. For his stepmother, we are probably going to write her a letter and get her something small like a ring dish or something.

Thank you! It seems to be a common gift of ties, letters and picture frames. I like these ideas so I think I will do those and try to do something personal and small for each person

I kind of figured it out. We are getting most everyone a picture frame. I got my mom and MIL robes for while we get ready. My dad I'm getting a flask that says father of bride and my mom I'm getting a wine tumbler that says mother of bride. I'm not sure whay my fiance is getting his dad or step dad but I'm at a point that that's his job and I kind of don't care haha it's all coming together thankfully!

I am excited it's been gone maybe about two weeks or so. And our RSVP deadline was yesterday so I need to start calling and messaging people. We probably have over a hundred that still haven't RSVP'd but some of it is my family that I know isn't coming from England.

I have found that gifts.com is a great place to get personalized gifts, pretty inexpensive, and they have a standard shipping rate for everything in your order, as opposed to etsy.com; where everything is coming from different vendors and you have to pay shipping costs on each individual item. Wish I had found them sooner!

Thank you I will have to check them out! Ya etsy can be nice but you definitely have to pay attention to where it's coming from and the shipping!
